Whats the point of the checkboxes to the left of all your songs?

I know that when you have a cd in your drive, the check boxes serve to check which songs you want ripped.

but say when you browsing through your library, whats the point of the checkboxes?

You can choose to have only the checked songs upload to your iPod.

It's a nice feature to check off songs or podcasts that you don't want to go on your Nano, for example, but don't want to trash.

It will only play checked songs if you're palying music from your library as well.
