I'm an AMD fanboy through and through, but i think i'd still recommend a P-m over the turion.
having said that, i haven't really looked into the power consumption or battery life characteristics of the turion system, which happens to be the most important part...
so, call me uninformed, but the p-m was a solid performer last time i checked. If you're really not too concerned about desktop replacement the VIA C3, C7 processors are incredibly efficient.

i'm looking for portability over power, but battery life is not a huge concern. probably going to get a 14", leaning towards compaq.

Either get the Toshiba M35 series or the Dell Latitude X1.. They are ultraportable laptops.
I am a AMD fanboy too but I would also recommend Pentium M over Turion. P-M just gives more battery life and better performance. Intel still has an edge over AMD in mobile processor (like P-M and Intel PDA processors). AMD kicks ass in Desktops processors!

What's your budget? I'd say IBM or Dell (both are Intel).
Do you want light or ultralight? I'm not at all a fan of ultralight - they sacrifice too much performance for size & weight. IBM (Lenovo) T series is the best available for a lightweight machine, IMHO.
