(I'm a late adopter when it comes to consoles)

I got a PS2, Logitech Force Pro GT Wheel, two controlers, GT4, and three other games for 80 clams tonight.

I had no idea it displayed high def and had optical outputs! This thing is great!-------------
Anyway, I'm getting Wild Arms3 (loved 2 on the PS) and Kingdom Hearts. Any other gems (older) that I should p/u?

Also, anyone have experience with DVD-->HD conversions for the PS2 and running games off of a USB HD?

The SSX games are good if you're into that kind of thing... and SSX 3 does 480P and looks real nice on an HD set.

Final Fantasy X. But NOT FFX-2.

I just dusted mine off and conneted it to my monitor. Someone had given me Kingdom Hearts for Xmas when it came out and I never played it so I decided I'd give it a whirl. Fun game, go with that one :) If you end up liking it go with FFX as mentioned above.

Depending on the generation of the PS2 you can display Progressive scan (480P) for your DVDs. All you need is component cables and a setting in the menu. It wont upscale to 720p or 1080i though for DVDs, but some games support those resolutions.

Listen very carefully! Go buy ICO, (most likely $14.99 used at EB) and buy Shadow of the Colossus ($34.99 used?) Ico first if you dont want to spend that much right away. Ok... go now!

Why are you still here?

OK OK! I'm going! Sheesh! :winkie:

I'm going to troll ebgames/gamestop this afternoon to snag a few titles. Thanks for the input so far.

I've googled proggies called HDAdvance and HDLoader that apparently allow you to load your DVDs to the HD connected to the netword adapter (very cool of them to make a little hole for it in the back)

(I have the 5000 model, and my TV reported that GT4 was displaying in 1080i, but it looked like 480p.)

hmmm 5000 or 50000?

If it is 5000 I am suprised the thing still works! Try playing a CD game (blue backed disk) and DVD game (a silver backed disk) to make sure they both work.

Mine is a later generation 50001 (mine was the first generation with built in DVD remote sensor, and it had a more silent cooling fan) Im sure you can find the model descriptions online somewhere because I have long since forgotten them.

Oh ya, how could I forget FFX. One of the best FF games, if you're into that.

Good, that 50001 should hold up unless you hit it with a hammer!

Erm...where? :hmm:
I'm wanting to pick one up as well (for a 3rd and finally 'permanent' time) but I don't want one enough to pay $150 for a new one. (Besides, I hear their current revisions, the small ones, and the current gen Dual Shock controllers are made with the cheapest, worst parts possible and they fall apart if you sneeze on them...so, old school and 'hefty' is the way to go.)

I also didn't want a slim unit, so I went used. I got it from camping craigslist.

BTW:

I just ordered HDAdvance 3.0 to copy my discs to an 80G Maxtor to reduce loadtimes.

I also bought Kingdome Hearts today and started that.
Ah...what a slothful hobby I have...

Sounds like you like RPG's. Kingdom Hearts was a good game, you'll enjoy it. I just started on Grandia 3 and I'm really enjoying it. It's put together really well and looks great.

I can tell you with the utmost assurance:
Buy God of War. NOW.
My brother in law called me a month ago while at a game store and said "I'm looking for a good game to get for Ps2." I told him to get God of War. (Even though I had never played it...people go nuts over GoW and I've heard a lot of comments from gamers and game magazines/reviewers that it's one of the best Ps2 titles.)

He bought it, played the hell out of it, *beat it*...and still thanks me for telling him to buy it. :)

Finally the other day he brought over his Ps2 to let me check it out/play it...and GoW will be the first Ps2 game I purchase. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Awesome game...well worth the money.

Z2D:

One thing I was thinking of doing, but didn't because....well...I don't really know why... is to hang outside of a ebgames store (with a cinnabun or two) on a Sunday afternoon and wait for a kid to bring in a PS2 for trade.

They get a whopping $35 for them! I was thinking $50 cash would get a PS2,especially if a parent was there too, which I figure would mean the kid wasn't trying to pawn off stolen goods.

Finally...www.stealitback.com was another avenue that I almost used.

I don'tk now what kind of TV you have but I went and picked up an AV cable for the PS-2 that has S-video connection and I must say the difference in picture is drastic. If you don't already have a S-Video or Component cable for the ps2 you bought, go get one! I only payed $8 for mine at EBGames.

I think he already has the component cables with an HD tv.

Hey Bires, have you had any experience with that stealitback.com ?

Bires

Ya. The guy threw in the monster cable Component cables and I'm displaying it on a 30" HDTV

I have never actually bought anything from stealitbackI've had an account for about a year now, , but a coworker uses it all the time to get tools and electronics. He loves it.

How are you liking Kingdom Hearts? Been playing this a lot past 3 days since hooking up my PS2 to my monitor. This is like the coolest game I have played in YEARS!

Very nifty game, although it's tough to see what I'm doing with all the effects, characters, and enemies on the screen. I just got access to the Gummi Ship.

The Ratchet and Clank series kicks ass.
I'm not sure why Plissken recommended Shadows of the Collossus. I wasn't too impressed, but I was only watching someone else play.
DOA2 Hardcore is a great cheap buy if you like fighting games.
I'm in the middle of Star Ocean and am loving it.
If you love good dialogue/story, pick up the legacy of kain/soul reaver series. You won't really get much of an appreciation for it though, unless you pick up the originals for playstation 1 and play through them.
Go get Mercenaries if you like blowing crap up.

Well its all personal preferences, but really the best part of this game is controlling the character!

Can somebody explain to me, or guide me to a good page that explains the different generations/models or PS2 consoles? I'm especially interested in their ability to be modded and HD output.

I just bought it today. I was hooked in the first level, when I killed a hydra by impailing it through a shattered ship's crows nest.

Good recommendation, well worth the $20. (You can get it new at most game stores for this price.)

It reminds me a lot of Devil May Cry. Anoter game that's WELL worth the money. One of the few games that when you crank up the difficulty, the game gets legitimatly harder. (Bosses have new moves, are tougher.) No rubberband AI there, just a good fun game.

I can give you a ballpark/idea of info.

-AFAIK all Ps2 systems can output 480p through component cables (readily available) but only some games support progressive scan.

-The new 'slim' Ps2 models do not support the hard drive but at the same time, you'll have a hard time finding a hard drive for the old model (design) systems; the only game that really supported it was FFXI (?) and the game sold...minimally...at best.

-Modding is...mmm I think it's easier now but you're still looking at a fair amount of wires to solder. There is a fliptop lid + swap disk solution that is easier to do and works with everything (or so I'm told). The question I have is...the new slim models have a fliptop lid already - I wonder if all you need now is just the swap disk (almost like Sony's making it easier). :P

-From what I hear, the new slim models are made with the most shoddy parts even moreso than before...I hear now the controllers don't even have a PCB in them, just (some sort of) ribbon cable and...pins? It was already bad enough with their hardware sometimes crapping out on people...I'm afraid to buy a slim one now but I really dig 'em. :)

-The slim model have built in network adapters...on all of the other models, it was an add on and I think they were about $30-$40 (one more + for getting a slim system).

I think that's about it...
