Dennis Weaver, an actor with a Midwestern twang who played stiff-legged Chester the deputy on "Gunsmoke" and the cowboy cop hero in "McCloud," has died. He was 81.

Weaver died Friday from complications of cancer at his home in Ridgway, in southwestern Colorado, his publicist, Julian Myers, announced Monday.

"He was a wonderful man and a fine actor, and we will all miss him," said Burt Reynolds, who appeared with Weaver in "Gunsmoke" in the early 1960s.

To me Dennis Weaver's best work was in the movie The Duel....interestingly one of Steven Spielburg's early movies. If you can rent a copy I highly recommend it.

:agree:

Yeah, one of Speilberg's first. Came out in 1971!

Great flick, amazing that it was so good despite a lack of any real dialogue. That was one bad ass trucker, though...:hehehmm:

I really don't know what the fascination with that movie was -- I had bought it after reading favorable reviews, and the entire group of people I showed it to (including myself) thought it was one of the most boring, dumbest movies we had seen in a long time.

Just my opinion though -- obviously I have different likes/dislikes than a lot of people.
