View Full Version : Would a dog eat a hamster???
Because Neil Armstrong the hamster escaped his cage yesterday, and Symba the German Sheppard is acting pretty weird. If he did meet this gruesome death, wouldn't I find some signs of a struggle...hamster-size blood stains, something? Ugh, anyone have any ideas on how to find this critter if he is alive and in hiding? HELP!

just did a search on the internet and quickly found several references to dogs that ate hamsters. :(
i would just put some food out tonight and see if any of it is missing in the morning to get a clue if the hamster is still living in hiding.
i had 3 hamsters when i was a kid. they just live to get loose.

Probably depends on the dog...
Would your dog eat a mouse if it got in the house? If so, then the hamster is probably dead meat.

Heck yes a German Sheppard would hunt the critter and consume it. I doubt you would find much blood as the dog would lick that little bit up but you might find some of the gristle.
Is this the type of dog that likes to chase squirrels and such in the yard/park?
If I were you I would do as Nickel suggested. Keep the dog penned up and see if the critter somes out for some food. I wouldn't hold out too much hope though.

I don't know, but that sounds like a big problem. Better hope that if little armstrong is still alive, he's not starving to death in your vents. that's a REAL stinky problem, trust me.

ROFL, that reminds me of this house my wife used to live in with 7 other girls during college. One of the girls thought traps were cruel, so she put down poison for the mice. Needless to say, they died in the heating ducts, but they didn't know that until December or so, when it starts getting cold in MN.
Nastay!
Hopefully you find him, in one piece.

And after he'd done this, he'd be more than happy to lick your face...

When my basenji caught and killed a baby rabbit, she swallowed it whole like a boa constrictor when she saw us coming to get here. No evidence anywhere aside from the digusting look on our faces and the satisfied prancing of the dog.

Yes, that is definately possible.
I remember when I was about 11-12 going over to my cousin's house that she had a hamster that somehow got loose, and her sweet little toy dog got him and chewed him up and left the carcass in her closet.
She was bawling and screaming like nothing I have ever seen when she found it. Pretty bad day in that household.

I watched in horror as my Lucy ran up on some cat dumb enough to jump into her yard and she tore that cat to bits - white fur and blood EVERYWHERE.:puke: yucko. But when she catches rats, she just swallows them whole. Terriers are great dogs when you live in FL! :thud: ( < I love that smily)

Does a porcupine float?
Great, I've searched the house, I find no crime scene or any evidence of a struggle. That damn hamster is just lying in wait, waiting for me to drop my guard and scare the life out of me.

So what are you doing with a glorified rat for a pet in the first place?

I have a friend w/a Shepherd/Collie mix who had that problem years ago. Hamster escaped, and owners found dog with hamster tail hanging out of mouth. Too late. :(

I remember when one of our ferrets went missing for a few days. (We were afraid she may have escaped to the outdoors - once that happens, you can about write that ferret off). But I was looking around in the basement and saw what looked like a fresh ferret poop. Sure enough, she was sleeping in a blanket on the floor down there.

Yes a Dog would eat a hamster
and Hamsters are escape artists as well. If you lose them you lose them The little guy is most likely running around the house stealing bits of food here and there... main dog food... unless that is how the dog ate him......
There are books and websites that will show you how to bait and catch a hamster. I Think most of the traps deal with a 5 galleon bucket, some books that form steps up to the bucket and some fruit in the bucket.... the Hamster will be attracted to the fruit, and jump or fall in the bucket (might want to pad it) and now you ahve your hamster. Just keep your doggie away from the bucket :)
oh yeah do this at night.... Hamsters are up and active at night. Also check the corners of room and dark areas for signs of Hamster poop.If you find droppings then yes your Hamster is still alive.
check out this page http://yolanda3.dynalias.org/dee/hamster/hamster.html
Just a side note the page is wrong, Hamster do not fear heights because they have NO dept perception.

Yes any sign of the little furball ;)... oh and What kind of Hamster is Mr. Armstrong? Winter White? Russian? Chinese? Robo? Syrian?
No sign of him anywhere. I left his food down, looked for him in the middle of the night, and looked for any 'trail' he may have left.
As for what kind of hamster he is (was?)...he's a petsmart special ;)
It's a miracle! Neil Armstrong is alive and well. Of course, he waited until I told the kids he was probably eaten by the dog, until all the tears were shed, and the funeral service planned.

You should reward the dog for being good by letting him eat the hamster.

i have gotten more laughter out of this thread than out of any other in recent memory...
man, if the dog in question is in the 50% or so of dogs that'll eat tennis balls, carpet, poop... i think it's safe to say it'd eat a hamster, that's for sure, so don't feel too bad about the assumption. s/he'll get over it. ;)
