I know just basics about my computer. Sometimes I hear about how your computer (or just what you are using it for at the time) will work better if you shut down unneeded processes. If I pull up a list of running processes on my computer, I may recognize a few of them but many of them are meaningless to me. What are important and what don't I need? Are any of them things I don't want to be running? Or just the question of what is that process? Could it be harmful? This is a site where you can enter the name of a process and it will tell you if it is important, should be ignored, or if it should be terminated ie if it were a virus or trojan. I haven't checked out my computer with it yet, but sounds very interesting and possibly very helpful. Maybe some of our resident experts could comment on it. It is free. http://www.processlibrary.com/#
Checked and didn't find anything. But be careful- one wrong letter may give you a warning about something that could be a trojan when the correct spelling is an important process.

The Black Viper's website used to be renowned for XP services information, but it has been down for a while. Major Geeks has an archive of his services list here (http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12).

Another place for good services information is The Elder Geek (www.theeldergeek.com) pages starting here (http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm).

I know I plug these guys a lot, but process explorer has a right click option that automatically googles a running process for you. Very handy for malware removal.
