MEYERSDALE, Pa. -- A former teacher was charged with sexually assaulting a student four years ago, when he was still teaching, police said.

James C. Stutzman, 61, of Meyersdale, was charged with statutory sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, indecent assault and corruption of minors.

He resigned from Meyersdale High School in January after about three decades as a teacher in the district, saying in a letter that "it was a convenient time to retire and work on his farm," said Superintendent Curtis Kerns.

Mr. Stutzman carried on a 14-month sexual relationship with the student, then 17, beginning in December 2001, police said.

Mr. Stutzman began a sexual relationship with the girl after they returned from a Future Farmers of America convention in March 2002. They had sex on at least two more occasions and the relationship continued until she graduated in 2002, police said.

Mr. Stutzman declined comment.

Hmm, honestly. I see a differenc, but it's not in the sex of the parties involved. It's the age. The young hot Floridian teacher was getting her rocks off, but there's an argument to be made that she's incompetent and that her emotional capacity was in arrested development or whatever. This guy is in his sixties. Not cool.

I think they mean that they had a 14 month relationship starting in Dec 01, but it didnt become sexual until March 02. Since it stated that the girl was 17 when it started, by the end she would have been 100% legal. In fact, under PA's old consent rules, it could have been ok if he was a young teacher. (Used to be 14 to consent in PA, but has since been changed to 16..and they follow the 4 year rule, if memory serves)
