random scanning...

Every week or so, my computer runs super slow and the hard drive light is flashing... its as if my computer is scanning for something... i get the same feeling when i do a virus scan... But when I check my avg, its not doing a scan... when I ctrl + alt + del.... nothing is shown.... any ideas on how i can stop this?

Could be the indexing service.

Go to your hard drive properties in Windows Explorer (right click on the C:\ drive, choose properties). Uncheck the 'Allow indexing service to index...' box & see if it goes away. You'll have to do this for every hard drive letter (not for CDs or removable drives).

If it's already unchecked, well, then keep looking!

On a more serious note, in addition to what Jeffbx suggested, you might see if you have any scheduled tasks (defragment, etc.). Things like Diskkeeper can be scheduled to defragement once a week.
