So, I found out from our HR person here that I have apparently been uninsured since I arrived in Germany. However, this whole time I have been paying into the health insurance. The insurance company f*cked up, basically.
Good news: I get all the insurance money I've paid for the past 10 months back . . . and I haven't needed insurance in this time. Best of both worlds.
Bad news: I'm not insured and have to scramble to get insurance from a private insurer . . . the state won't insure me since I have no social security / health history here.
I'm not sure how much money I'll be getting back, but it should be somewhere around 2,000 Euros as a result of this.

I wouldn't say you were very lucky nothing happened, since chances are low, but still, you were fortunate.
Sucks that the f'd up, but private insurance is going to cost a lot no?

I haven't had to use insurance in 5 years, so I'm a great find for the insurance companies, but you always have insurance on the off-chance something happens.
I'm very glad nothing did, but as I said . . . now I have kind of the best of both worlds . . . made it through AND get my money back! heh.
I wonder if this includes my dental insurance, as well . . . I think that will make it another 1000 Euros or so!
There are some private insurance policies here that are on-par with cost/quality of government policies. So the cost of the private insurance isn't much of a concern . . . it's just trying to wade my through the mess of German insurance forms, etc. that will be a pain in the butt . . .
Oh yeah . . . and BS . . . glad to know you've got my back! ;)

"Who are you going to shoot, ze germanz?"
If you happen to find any beer clauses let me know, I might sign up too. Also, if you have to get a physical, watch out for any nurses named Brunhilda!

So basically are you saying that you NEVER go to see your doctor for annual/semi-annual checkups and whatnot? (or if you do, you pay the full price out-of-pocket?
5 years is a long time to not see a doctor if you haven't done so...

I haven't seen a doctor in a long time too. Once I almost went when I was worried about meningitis but got immediately better after a midterm. :P

Well... I guess as you get older, they recommend that you go to at least get your annuals done.

Now that's just funny!
DF - Yeah, no doctors for me in the past 5 years . . . haven't had to take a sick day in 5 years either (And no, based on Nickel's 'presenteeism' thread, it's not just out of willful toughness to stick it out while sick).
However, you are right . . . it is too long and I should see someone. I've given blood many times and have had basics checked as a result of that . . . and, I tend to be very healthy . . . exercise, eat healthy, no smoking . . . OK, maybe a bit too much drinking, but not too bad ;)
Now that I have to get private insurance, I will have to have a doctor's visit to ensure my insurability.
