This is one of those feel good stories that reminds me that humanity is still around.
ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - When a couple left a huge tip on the table at a local restaurant, their waitress figured it had to be a joke.
They left $1,000 to cover a bill of $26.35 and a note saying “Keep the change! Have a great day.”
The gift left waitress Amanda Newkirk teary with excitement. But the 19-year-old, who is seven-months pregnant, couldn’t figure out why she’d been given such a generous tip.
A couple days later, she got her answer.
A 28-year-old widow called Newkirk’s boss to say she’d left the tip because she “didn’t need it,” and wanted to give it to someone who did.
Erin Dogan says she’s a shopaholic and could have easily spent the money at a mall. She says giving the money to Newkirk made her feel “phenomenal.”

wow, a 28 year old widow... she could easily be caught up in her own sad state, or trying to plan for her own future, and yet, she thought of someone else instead. that's impressive!

Damn straight...that's a true Virginian for ya.
Hopefully that act of kindness will have a ripple effect, especially on her new baby. That type of thing can go a long, long way...

:agree:
Random acts of kindness usually keep on going - that's why I'm a believer/participator. Even if it's something as simple as letting someone pull in front of me while driving if they're turning onto the street and traffic's stopped, etc. Every little bit helps.

i agree, but what i am wondering is why she called up the waitress's boss to tell him she had left the tip?

I nice thing for her to do and for the recipient as well. Whatever the motives, it seems to have been a win-win.

I hope that there's a follow-up story that states that the woman left the $1000 tip because she was afraid the waitress heard her discussing plans to scam her husband's life insurance.
That'll teach you to believe in humanity!

...or a story of the widow calling back a couple days later saying she had confused the $1000 bill for a $10. Then the story would get huge media coverage, cause the waiter would sue the widow. Then the widow would counter-sue. Then through this story the widow's insurance scam plot would get exposed....
or maybe not.

Good thing the title didnt say waitress given a nice tip...I would have thought it was a Prince Albert or something. :naughty:
Seriously though, that is a nice story but who in their right mind would do that.

maybe the story ran in the local paper and the recipient was looking for the person to thank them?

It is a win/win situation.
Waitress really needed the money and the woman who left it really needed her 15 minutes. She was interviewed on Good Morning America: Weekend this morning. Interiew was about 5 minutes so I think we will be seeing more of her.
She was having a discussion with a friend over coffee re the value of money and said some questions needed to be answered. She was vague. She found out the waitress was pregnant and needed the money and, to prove her point (vague again), decided to leave the tip.
I noticed that everytime the attention switched to someone other than her, she would stop smiling. I found her a little scary :gle:

Maybe the waitress was just trying to confirm that the tip was legitimate. If I were to receive a tip of that size when waiting a table worth $26, I would try to contact the person who left the tip, so I could return their money if it was a mistake.

I've gotten a $100 tip a couple of times and man, it feels pretty good. Once i worked for it, the other was just very nice.

Excellent story.
It warms my heart to see that a pregnant woman working a job to make something of herself, and try to have everything she can to raise her kid, can recieve such a reward.
I've always found chairity more rewarding than a first of the month check. Hence why I believe giving to the poor is a chairity, not a government obligation.
We should hear more of the positive news out of the media... im tired of hearing about dark depression, evil, scams, politics, hatred, what nazi group is marching where, explaining how screwed future generations might be, and placing sympathy for sadness over the uplift of heart. (Literally watching the news is more depressing than a funeral anymore.)
