Jones signs controversial WR to 3-year contract

After a week of rumors and reports, the Dallas Cowboys and free-agent receiver Terrell Owens made it official Saturday when he signed a three-year, $25 million contract to play for America's Team.

Owens, who created off-the-field controversy that ripped apart San Francisco and Philadelphia, receives a signing bonus of $5 million and a base salary this season of $5 million.

"This is no free lunch for the Dallas Cowboys," owner Jerry Jones said about Owens' contract at a news conference at the team's headquarters. "We've made a commitment to him.

"This wasn't done cavalierly. We did our homework. We know this makes us a better team."

The Eagles released Owens last week. The Cowboys cleared a spot for him by releasing receiver Keyshawn Johnson.

"I couldn't be happier," Owens said. "I'm a star among stars now. My main focus is to win a championship."

Deal fine by Parcells
Owens, who infuriated Cowboys fans and players in 2000 when he danced on the midfield star at Texas Stadium after scoring two touchdowns for San Francisco, vowed to be a different player with Dallas than he was with the 49ers and Eagles.

"Of course I've made mistakes," he said. "I've learned some lessons, but you can't move forward if you keep bringing up the past. I'm going to put those things behind me. They can only make a man stronger, wiser. ... I'll be a better teammate, a better person, a better man in life. I'm looking forward to this opportunity."

Coach Bill Parcells was not present at the news conference, but Jones said nothing should be read into it. Parcells hasn't attended any of the news conferences the Cowboys have had to announce free-agent signings.

"Bill was very much a part of this decision from the get-go," Jones said. "Bill is very much on the same page with all of us. ... If there's a tie, I break it. But there's was no tie here. We both wanted Terrell to be part of this team."

Jones seemed to believe that if Owens becomes a problem again, Parcells will handle him.

"We understand that this signing opens the door for more scrutiny of our organization," Jones said, "but Bill has a successful track record of taking high-profile players and making everybody understand what a locker room is all about. ... I've always believed that if I'm going to gamble, I'm going to gamble with quality. And Terrell is quality."

Owens, 32, has been to five Pro Bowls in his last six seasons. When he was answering a question, he looked at Jones.

"I know what's expected of me, and I won't let you down," Owens said.

When reminded he had said basically the same things when he arrived in Philadelphia, Owens said: "This is America's Team. I feel right at home."

Thanks bro. I'm not 100% sold on this one, because the guy appears to be a real @sshole. Has he changed? I sure hope so...but doubt it.

At least we've got a guy who's guarenteed to have monster games against Philly each year. And I like the contract, since we can basically cut him at any point and not get killed on our cap.

Doesn't seem like a great move. He already showed a hint of his attitude in the press conference. I'd give him 3/4 of a season until he starts complaining about his team, then eventually blaming them for everything.

Nah, even went he went to Philly he was a good soldier for the first year. Same in SF, though he was a rookie. He'll be fine this year, but moving forward...well, time will tell.

He's definitely got the $$$ he was complaining about. Question will be if he acts up when another WR signs a huge extension and eclipses what he's making. Then we might have problems...

If it's not another WR, it's going to be the fact that he isn't thrown the ball perfectly every pass, every game, every season. He loves ripping on the QB and he won't hold back with Bledsoe any more than he did with McNabb.

Well, Key wanted me more $$$ too. If you're going to have an unhappy WR on your team, might as well be the best in the business.

Well, even with "spout off" being a pretty vague statement...I'll pass on that bet. ;)

With that said, I still think (hope) he'll be a better soldier in Big D than he was in SF or Philly. *crosses fingers*

If he's not complaining about his Bledsoe's throwing ability, now he'll probably complain about how much Julius Jones gets the ball. :argue:

Wow, this is going to be a BUST. :dead:
Johnson was a stud last year for Dallas...way to upgrade, guys.

Heh, that was the only period I rooted for them, beginning with the moment they hired Jimmy Johnson as coach, grabbed Russell Maryland, Mike Irvin, and Emmitt (and Steve Walsh, even though they didn't keep him). It was like they brought The U straight to the pros.

Now THAT's a strategy I can get behind. :)

To clarify, I know that Emmitt wasn't from The U. But I liked Emmitt in college, since the Canes didn't have to play the Gators.

I am not against it.....just the opposite.....anything that makes the cowboys suck more is a great thing!!!! Dallas ---> Keep on suckin'. :P

BTW - For the record there is no way, no how that I would want TO on the Steelers. I knew there was little to no chance of that happening (thankfully) but I thought it was great that the Steelers (Cowher to be exact) came out and said they were not interested at all.

And the gamble isn't going to pay off very much for the next 2-4 weeks.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2592163

IRVING, Texas -- Terrell Owens (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3664) will miss two to four weeks after breaking a finger Sunday night in the Dallas Cowboys (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=dal)' 27-10 victory over Washington.

Dallas Cowboys

Profile (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=3664)2006 SEASON STATISTICSRecYdsTDAvgLongYAC680113.32133
The controversial wide receiver broke his right ring finger and will need surgery; he said it'd be Monday, but the team said it also could be Tuesday. The Cowboys have a bye next week.
Owens said he was hurt on the first or second play of the game, but didn't tell anybody until the fourth quarter. He said it was a "fluke thing" and occurred when he was blocking.
"I think my hand got caught on a guy's jersey or something. I kind of felt something weird with it," Owens said. "I just kind of felt like I jammed it. I kept playing."
Owens, who missed much of training camp and the preseason because of a hamstring injury after signing a three-year, $25 million deal that includes a $5 million bonus and a $5 million salary in 2006, struggled against the Redskins. Owens flubbed a pass in the end zone on the opening drive -- the first of three drops. By game's end, he was getting his hand X-rayed, his stats sealed at three catches for 19 yards.
TOs for T.O.T.O. went down Sunday with a broken bone in his finger and will miss two to four weeks. But time off is nothing new for the Cowboys receiver. He's missed a lot of time over the previous four seasons. SeasonGames missedReason2006 ? Broken finger 2005 9 Suspension 2004 2 Ankle injury/fractured fibula 2003 1 Broken collarbone 2002 2 Groin injury While Owens wasn't sure when he got hurt, he drew a personal foul penalty on the Cowboys' first offensive snap of the game for an illegal block.
On the dropped touchdown, Owens said he was trying to gather in the ball when cornerback Mike Rumph (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=5913) knocked the ball away.
"I didn't really have my full strength in my hand, so I think that probably may have contributed with him punching it out," Owens said.
The X-rays revealed the break. His right hand was partially wrapped after the game.
"I feel like I'm a quick healer," Owens said. "Once we have the surgery, the healing process will start. ... I'm going to try to get back as soon as I can."
The Cowboys resume their schedule Oct. 1 at Tennessee before heading to Philadelphia on Oct. 8 for Owens' much anticipated first game against his scorned former team, the Eagles.
After Owens felt a twinge in his hamstring the first week of training camp, he missed more than 20 workouts and the first three preseason games. Two MRIs were clear, but Owens still flew in several doctors and trainers to California, plus a hyperbaric chamber, because he still didn't feel right.
Last week, in a loss at Jacksonville, Owens played much better with six catches for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Thank God for the bye week. Wanna bet if he makes it back for the Philly game in 3 weeks? ;)

And 'Skins fans are a funny lot. They spent the better part of the morning telling me how Dallas didn't take advantage of things, dropped passes, had penalties, didn't look good. Anything to move the focus away from the real issue: right now, Washington is a bad team. Wonder how Danny Boy feels about shelling out all that $$$ for his coaches and free agent trophies now?

It's not the first time Snyder has spent all this money on worthless free agents. Think back to Deion. Even Brunell is a waste of money. I have no idea why we decided to sign Brandon Lloyd, Antwaan Randle El AND David Patten in the offseason.

They're the same team, with Dallas' offense playing better than Washington's right now.

QB: same. Aging veteran who should be replaced by the new kid.
WR: same. Big money spent. We'll see what the results are like.
