Well I am sure some of you saw my previous thread explaining my turmoils with my IPOD. Well to make a long story short in under a year I had to have it replaced three times. Not one worked over 6 months. So after I got the third one, it died recently, sad face icon and loud noises from the HD. I call support and they say they can charge me $45 bucks no guarnatee on fixing it and then if they can't, they can repalce it for 299. I laughed and hung up. So I decided to write a letter on HPs site (got an HP branded IPOD)directed to the president telling them they sold a faulty product. I got a call back from Corporate and they said we are sorry but since we no longer partern with Apple I can give you a $50 credit on HP shopping. I went to their site and basically could get squat without shelling out a ton of money. I wrote another letter telling them that the $50 was an insult and got someone else who called me back. Here is where it gets interesting.

He told me that YOU SHOULD NEVER RUN WITH AND IPOD. He said their support reps said in their notes that I was told many times not to run. I said I was never told that. He said it is written down so it is fact. I about lost my lunch. I said just because it is in writing does not make it fact. I said I should get full credit for the IPOD since it was faulty. He said he can't do that. We ended up settling on a credit for $150 on HP. This was the not so suckkage part.

My real gripe is them saying you should not run with them. The second gripe is their support reps saying what covers their A$$es versus what actaully happened. How can you sell all the accessories for an IPOD to exercise, but then say you can't run with it. Give me an F'in break. I will never buy another Apple product as long as I live. I semi applaud HP for stepping up when they did not have to, but it was a pain. Now I have to find something I want for the credit and turn around and sell it on ebay to get a new flashed based player.

Rant Over.

I've never heard anything about not running with an IPOD. Sounds like a lame excuse for a defective unit.

He then proceeded to tell me running with the IPOD was like running with a Notebook Computer.

Actually, it pretty much is. A running drive can stand approx 5g of force in operation. That's equiv to a 6 in. fall on a hard surface. You do much more on an average jog.

OK then why doesn't it state anywhere that you should not run with it? Why create accessories to use for running or exercising? To me if I should not run with it, it should say this device is not recommended for use while running. Don't tell me after the fact.

You really should *not* run with any HD based player, but they don't tell you that anywhere for fear of losing sales. It's pretty crappy business, especially since there are so many accessories geared toward running.

Just ebay the $150 certificate - you won't be able to get your $ out of anything you buy on the HP site. But someone who's buying a laptop or iPaq might want it.

Yeah I will have to see how the certificate will work. That would be the easiest. I hope its just a number to put in upon checkout. If not I think I will get one of their cheaper laser printers and sell it for like 90 bucks plus shipping. If I can get 90 for a 130 credit on HP I would be a happy camper.

I dont own an Ipod, so what I am about to say is second hand but I take my father as a reliable source. When he went to buy an ipod for my step-mother, he was asked whether or not she exercised. When he asked why, they told him that if she was going to use it while exercising that the Nano was the only choice as it is a flash drive rather than hard drive and thus would be ok. So while I dont doubt that none of the techs told you not to exercise with it, what they wrote to cover themselves was actually what the reputable store told my father.

On another note, dont you wish you had bought it at Costco with their guarantee. If it was from them, you would have gotten back all you paid, no hassles. I am sure they mark the serial numbers of the units they sell, so I wouldnt try to work their system, but honestly its one of the reasons why I tend to buy any consumer electronics I can get from them. Now, I wont sacrifice just to get the protection, but if its the same product and it is close in price, its a no brainer.

i have a mini, i exercise with it, although i'm fully aware that shaking that HD around in there could easily crap the thing out. I'm willing to take the risk.

besides that i've been really displeased with the sound quality.

I probably should have known better. If they would have told me this the first time I could have corrected issue. Well I am waiting for the new Sandisk 6GB flash player to come out. Its cheaper than the 4gb nano, plays video, has an FM tuner, can voice record, and show photos. It also has a mico sd slot to add more capacity. Apple won't get another dime of mine ever. I will also make sure everyone else knows not to buy them either.

hmm that makes sense. I used to shoot hoops with my ipod. and after a few weeks the hard drive skips around on its own. Cuts of songs at random points and at the end of one song, it plays 5 seconds of another song.. i imagine i have made the hd train jump its tracks too many times.. :(

Hmmm. Does anyone know of any problems exercising with the iPod Shuffle? I have one, but haven't put it to use much. I'm assuming it's ok to exercise with it, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, sucks to have a device go defective just b/c you give it a bit of a shake every now and then!! Sorry to hear about the iPod issue.

Yes, the shuffle is fine to exercise with since there are no moving parts inside of it.

To be fair to Apple, it's a hard drive issue, not an ipod issue. A hard drive is pretty sensitive to shock, so something as simple as running or doing aerobics with it can kill the drive. The same is true for ANY HD based media player.

What has happened to you is EXACTLY the reason why they don't tell you not to run with it anywhere...
Because they can *once again - inclusive of your initial purchase* charge the sh*t out of you.

That's the way the iPOD works, they get by with creating products that are inherently damaging to your products. Why? So in 6 months when your warranty is void, they can charge you infinity+11 dollars again for a new iPOD.

Sorry to hear about your woes though.
Good to hear that it's fixed now :)

:stupid:

Haven't bought mine yet, but it's an excellent excellent player and cheaper than an ipod.

My next player needs to be flashed based as any HD player will have the same issue. Thanks for the suggestion though.
