try to find one where the firmware is not upgraded. my friend has one where the firmware is not upgraded, and you can put any movies you want on there. it's pretty sweet. thats about the extent on what I know about the psp.

That's what I heard too, but the firmware that has not been upgraded is from an old batch. I doubt are like that. I wonder if you could still do that with the latest versions.

From what I've heard, if you keep the old Firmware, soon you will not be able to play newer games on the PSP as they are writing code into newer games that will be incompatible with devices running old firmware.

I remember seeing an article at some point about using a program that allows the PSP to control other devices (media center pc, stereo system, anything with adaptable IR)like a remote control. That sounded pretty interesting and was the only reason I ever considered picking up one of the little buggers...but I can't really recall any of the details anymore, and I'm not even sure if the author was bluffing or putting down a wishlist of PSP future features. Heck - I might have even dreamed it. Anyway...does anyone know if the PSP really can be used as a universal remote to control everything from dvd players to remote sensitive light switches (like the tablet pc used in Hitch)?

If the remote control function is the one and only reason you want one, then you might want to consider one of these Logitech Harmony RCs. They are very popular among home theater enthusiasts. Super expensive for remote controls, but most of them are still cheaper than a PSP.

There has been some stuff on the rumor mill that the next generation PSP will come with a Hard Drive and a Digital Camera lense.
Thats expected (if theory is correct) to be released in October.
But to decide if you need a PSP or not, think of it like this.
1) Is there ANY game you ACTUALLY want to play on it?
2) Do you have the 100+ Extra Dollars to Get a Case, Extra Battery, Games, Movies, Etc etc.
2) Do you have ANOTHER 100 Dollars to get a 1 Gig Memory Card?
PSP isn't 200 dollars, its 400 dollars.

My father loves the Harmony 628 remote I bought him.
I have a PSP now, but mostly play Ridge Racer on it (fun racing game) :)

If games are your top priority, and not other media such as movies and music, seriously consider a Nintendo DS. I believe its game library is superior, even though it may not have the 3D processing ability of the PSP. If you want hardcore 3D graphics though, go get an Xbox 360, the PSP graphics max out somewhere between PS1 and PS2 (so nothing stunning you havent seen before)

ArkiStan - I've thought about grabbing one of those Harmony remotes for a while, but I can't decide between going high end with the color screen...or just settling for the $129 XBox 360 version of the Harmony. It doesn't have quite as many random bells and whistles, but it does include the XBox 360 ABXY buttons, so it can be used to play simple Live Arcade games when you don't feel like holding the 360 controller in 2 hands. Anyway, I was thinking of the PSP as controlling a lot more than just a home theater system, but also control the room's lighting and climate, but...I guess the Harmony can do that with its IR-receiver. I could probably just point the AC remote right at the base of the Harmony and memorize the functions (even if they're not on the Logitech site yet). I guess the Harmony could do everything I want. I just want a higher end universal remote than the Harmony 360...but I still want the 360 buttons. :passwird:
