South Park gets revenge on Chef

Isaac Hayes did not participate in the new episode

South Park has exacted revenge on its former star Isaac Hayes by turning his character Chef into a paedophile and seemingly killing him off.
The opening episode of the 10th series, screened in the US on Wednesday, appeared to be a satire on Scientology.

Hayes, a Scientologist, quit the animated comedy after a different episode ridiculed the religion.

In the new show, Chef is brainwashed by the "Super Adventure Club" - thought to be a veiled reference to Scientology.

The other characters are angry at "that fruity little club for scrambling his brains".

Patched together

Hayes did not participate in the episode but his lines were apparently patched together from previous recordings.

Chef arrives after travelling the world with the Super Adventure Club and repeatedly tells the children he wants to "make sweet love" to them.

The children take him to a psychiatrist and then a strip club, where he remembers his love for women and is cured.

But he is brainwashed by the Super Adventure Club again - before falling off a bridge and being burned, stabbed and mauled by a lion and a grizzly bear.

'Hurt and confused'

At his funeral, one of the children says: "A lot of us don't agree with the choices the Chef has made in the last few days.

"Some of us feel hurt and confused that he seemed to turn his back on us.

"But we can't let the events of the past few weeks take away the memories of how Chef made us smile."

I watched it and I think they did a good job editing the audio into a "reasonable" storyline in the South Park tradition. I was surprised that they killed him off but I think at the funeral they made a very good point about clubs, cults, religious affiliation, and free will. It was like they hoped Hayes would return and that the y didn't blame him at all for what's he did but the club just brainswashed him.

I mean they did leave it open for him to come back by giving him the Revenge of the Sith ending.

I thought the episode was hilarious! The fact that Trey and Matt don't take themselves too seriously and make fun of everyone is the reason why I still love "South Park."

I saw it and although I am a huge Southpark fan I didn't like this episode. I thought that they didn't do right by Chef. Perhaps they were trying to give some "tough love" to Isaac Hayes but it still seems below the belt. They didn't take the higher ground that's for sure.

They could have done a lot worse to his character and they didn't really let him have it at the end like you know they could have. Instead they blamed the Super Adventure Club instead.

The episode was about average for South Park, including several thinly veiled cracks on Scientology, but I thought the eulogy praising Chef was as close to heart-felt as Matt & Trey have ever done. It was pretty much a "sorry to see you go, remember all the laughs we shared" type of thing that I thought showed a lot of class.

I actually sided with Matt & Trey on this issue, where basically they said that they've picked on a lot of different religions: Catholics, Jews, Mormons, Buddists, just to name a few. But when they did Scientology (in my opinion a cult/religion that needed lampooning) Isaac Hayes took it to heart and quit.
