Has anyone been able to do this successfully? I have two older machines (both PIII laptops - a Dell and an IBM) that just won't boot the install CD. It boots fine on a newer machine, but nada on the laptops - I even tried re-burning it.

yeah, on my dell inspirion 1100.
yeah, my friend got it installed on his Dell Latitude that's 4 years old or so. I installed it on a really old desktop that's running a 700 Mhz celeron. not sure what's wrong with your system not booting the CD ... what kinda errors are you getting? does it say?

Nah, it was weird - no errors. I tried it on two different machines. Both machines boot to a Windows CD with no problem, but when I pop in the Ubuntu CD, it looks at the CD drive for a while & then boots from the HD.

Nope, I re-burned it & tried it on a newer PC to be sure, and it boots with no problem on a 400sc desktop. And to make things even more strange, I can boot a Knoppix CD on the laptop in question with no problem.
I must have seriously annoyed one of the computer gods. I'll have to sacrifice an ipod or something to get back into their good graces.
