ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Surgeons operated on a 2-month-old Pakistani girl Tuesday to remove two fetuses that had grown inside her while she was still in her mother's womb, a doctor said.

The infant, who was identified only as Nazia, was in critical condition following the two-hour operation at The Children's Hospital at Pakistan Institute of Medical Science in the capital, Islamabad, said Zaheer Abbasi, head of pediatric surgery at the hospital.

Abbasi, the chief doctor who led the operation, said the case was the first he was aware of in Pakistan of fetus-in-fetu, where a fetus has grown inside another in the womb.

"It is extremely rare to have two fetuses being discovered inside another," Abbasi told The Associated Press, adding that he did not know what caused the medical abnormality. "Basically, it's a case of triplets, but two of the siblings grew in the other."

The baby comes from Abbotabad, about 30 miles north of Islamabad. She is the fifth child of a woman in her 30s, who was at the hospital to be with her daughter. Her father works in the Arabian Gulf.

Abbasi said surgeons removed the two partially grown fetuses, totaling about two pounds, that had died at about 4 months.

Other fetus-in-fetu cases have been reported elsewhere in the world. A report in a June 2000 issue of the U.S. journal Pediatrics called such occurrences rare and estimated their rate at about 1 per 500,000 births.

Found this uhhh.. Interesting.

So would the Right to life people get mad if the baby was born with Growing/Living Fetii inside? :)

Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I doubt that can happen. It would have killed the "host" baby and the other 2 would have no way to survive.

That would be my guess but to be honest, I've never heard of this stuff before... I really have no idea. Although I did know this one girl (very hot but not quite all there mentally) who wanted to be the first person to have a baby who was already pregnant... gotta send her this article to dash her dreams. :)

My guess is that the other fetuses aren't in the baby's uterus (or even if they were, the uterus isn't ready to take them) so they were probably already dead (if really that well formed at all)... kinda like an ectopic pregnancy in an adult. I'd be pretty surprised if the two fetuses in the baby were alive when they were removed... of course I already am surprised that something like this is even possible so shows how little I know.

I've seen stranger things, but this one is pretty bad. I haven't seen a case like this though. Then again, I'm not an OB/GYN, though I do remember reading about such cases back in the day when I was training.

Wow, there was a similar story a few years ago where a child in China had to have a fetus from from him.

They say the fetus's were dead.. But at about 4 months in the stage of development. So in reality they were alive in the baby.. somehow. For 4 months.

That's just creepy... the body does weird things. Or I guess, the bodies.
