Does anyone know how to block one IP address from being accessed via the web? I have a friend who has a popup which he cannot block no matter what he does. He wants to instead disallow access to the IP address. The problem is that when it pops up there is an IP instead of a www address, otherwise he'd be able to block it in the hosts file. Is there another way of blocking an IP other than the hosts file?

Thanks mucho.

Just enter it as a website. www.xxxx.com is the same as 10.23.134.56

You can just setup a rule to disallow/reject any traffic from specific IP addresses via your firewall...
If it's a windows firewall, then I believe you can do the same thing, or at least something similar.
Hopefully just blocking the traffic to/from the IP will be sufficient, I'd hope.

and

127.0.0.1 10.23.134.56 ?

I've tried this before and more than likely it won't do exactly what you are hoping it will. The popup will still come up it will just be a popup 404.

I hear ya. Although I couldn't find that setting in the firewall. Also based on what chadInc said, I think it's probably a bad idea to block the one IP anyway.

Add that IP addy to the "Restricted Sites" zone in IE. You may still get the popup or popunder, but it'll be blank.

It sounds also like you may have a spyware issue.

If its "Messenger Service" speak now, its very easy to get rid of.

If it's an advertizement like popup in a web browser, then run some spyware scans, its definately infected.

If that doesn't work it means he has a nasty, try HijackThis (google), and run it.

After that, if all else fails, delete any suspicious programs you KNOW you didnt install, and that are non-windows related, from programs, and shread them with a program (Norton works, so does spybot s&d), do this in safe mode. If it doesn't work then I'm afriad youll need to dig out your XP disc.
