I'm trying to save energy so I was wondering if it was possible to schedule a boot. For instance if you wanted to snipe an ebay auction at 3pm tomorrow but don't want the computer on in the meanwhile. Even better if the solution was OS independent.

I may have been a bit too hasty in posting this. I think I figured out. I'm testing a program: nvram-wakeup

Some PC have a timer boot in the BIOS. I used to do this with my HTPC so that it would turn itself on about 30 mins before the show I wanted to record would start.

Some UPS systems (using their software) will automatically power down and restart your computer at a set time (the UPS has some sort of a "sleep timer" that the software sends it at shutdown time). Mine (an APC) at work powers the computer down at 6:00pm and powers it back up at 8:00am the next morning (unless it's a weekend, then it waits until Monday morning).

Right now I'm having trouble where the computer never comes up at the specified time even if I set the time in bios by hand. I believe what's happening is the computer is turning off hardwarewise rather than "soft off"ing :(

Thanks. I may look into that software.

Are you saying there is a way to program eBay snipes?

There are web sites that (for a fee) will set up automated snipes. I've never used them, though. I prefer the adrenaline rush of the sporting methods. :D

I also love the rush. The only problem is I'm so forgetful....:gle:

Are you saying there is a way to program eBay snipes?AuctionSentry. I learned about it here on the board. I figured it was safe to use (you, obviously, have to reveal your password) because so many people use it. BTW I solved the problem. There's a reboot program that comes with nvram-wakeup that will "soft off"

I've downloaded Auction Sentry (courtesy of Delta ^^). It seemed simple enough but for some reason had a problem retrieving data on auctions, I dunno if its just a settings error but I'm sure its evadable.
In any case, there might be a way to configure between scheduled tasks & hibernation, a solution to your problem.
Are you doing this on a laptop?
