Is the XBOX Live subscription specific to a user or to a machine? In other words if I purchase a 12 month subscription for the 360 and have over 3 friends, can all three play online or do they have to have their own subscription?

in regular XBOX it was machine specific, a friend told me that you can go to various X360s and use your log in and not have to save it on to a memory card, like how you would on XBOX. As for your friends coming over to play, it is not a problem but you all wont be able to play certain game types, like HALO 2, with ranked game variations. Your guests will have the same gamertag as you or the main host.

With the original Xbox the account was saved to the HD (and that file could be saved to memory card if you wanted to play while at a friend's house).
If I remember correctly (canceled Live a few months ago and never had anyone play as a "Guest" under my account), Live lets you have 1 guest play with you...not 3. If you have a Live account, you can have 1 guest...if another friend has a Live account, they can access their account on your system + have 1 guest meaning you could have 4 people playing on Live at one time, but 2 of them need Live accounts.
Before I had an account (back when it first started), I played as a Guest at a friends house in MechAssault, and another friend (who had a Live account) had one more friend 'Guest' under his...but AFAIK you can only have 1 guest per Live account.
Unless they changed it or it's different with 360's.
Check the Live (http://www.xbox.com/Live) page.
Live accounts can be tied into a machine (particularly a machines serial #) if you are caught with a modded system on Live. They will blacklist your account + your machine by serial # and tie the two together. (just an fyi)
I am pretty sure you can have 3 other people play with you on 1 XBox Live account, as long as you are on the same XBox.

• Xbox Live
When you connect to Xbox Live, you can play with up to 16 players. See the specific game's requirements to determine how many players can play on Xbox Live. You can use the following combinations for a 16-player game on Xbox Live:
• 16 players using 16 consoles
With this combination, 1 player can play on each console.
• 16 players using 8 consoles
With this combination, 2 players can play on each console. On each console, you must have 1 Xbox Live account and 1 guest.
• 16 players using 4 consoles
With this combination, 4 players can play on each console. On each console, you must have 1 Xbox Live account and 3 guests.
Wow...I was wrong...you can have up to 3 guests. They might've changed this since the last time we did it though; like I mentioned before, at the time it seemed like they only allowed 1 guest.
