http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8901/dscn07195ly.jpg I caught these guys yesterday morning on my way to work - if I had been speeding (going the other way) I would have NEVER known where they came from.

Tricky! Glad you were driving under the radar, so to speak.

what are they going to do? run after you if you're speeding?

They possibly would use a radio to contact a police car that is just out of your visual range to report your speeding.

:stupid:

I've seen that a lot, especially with laser. The guy holding the laser gun either has to hold it REALLY still or rest it on top of his patrol unit or something. Then again, I have seen officers immediately jump into their cars and chase down speeders. Makes me want to get a laser diffuser. My V1 has saved me a couple of times from lasers (reflections from other cars, or just dumb luck,) but I'm still a slight bit paranoid, especially since they've been using laser on local roads lately in NOLA, especially near the end of the month....

No, just wave at you to stop. What are you gonna do? Run?

actually, DF was right. They had a couple of motorcycle cops sitting completely COMPLETELY out of site a bit South (when I came up to them, they were just sitting and definitely not engaged in the radar) so I imagine the laser guy just radios in. But what is with the radar next to him? Training? Confirmation? I would argue something with that photo if I got nailed that morning! :) "It was the one armed man!" anything! LOL

Yeah, that's what they were doing at my last sighting. The guy just ran out into the road and flagged down the people who were caught.

Heh...I don't' think it's confirmation. Laser has been deemed accurate w/o radar confirmation. AFAIK, the only non-accurate radar is POP. Maybe that's what they were doing. "POPping" the cars and then hitting them with laser for confirmation.

Thats what they do. At least in my department, they post units further down so when vehicle plates and descriptions are given, a traffic stop can be initiated.

Oh and for those who think they are being trapped...think about it. When you see a cop you slow way down, when they pass, you speed back up. This method is more successful in that you never know where they are posted, so just do the general limit.

I think I'd rather have everyone drive the safely sometimes (when they see a cop car) than drive 0.5% slower all the time, thus I think our tax dollars are better spent on a visible cop car than a hidden one.

I wanna go out someday by the freeway and bust out a hairdryer and point it at cars....then see how many slam on their breaks. =)

I'm a bad bad person.

:stupid: I've even been through some cities who keep permanent units on the road w/o drivers. I don't advocate speeding, but, yes, I'm guilty of it. I never blow by people or anything though.

As far as hidden cops, I don't like the idea of someone watching me "from the trees" as I go by. I know it's probably a necessary evil to catch the wackos who don't know how to drive, but often it's used to make money for the county/city/etc. Despite the denials, many areas do have quotas, and setups like the one I described above, with the radar AND laser setup and the guy running out onto the 3 lane road flagging people down was on the 2nd to last day of the month...

Some departments have "quotas", obviously using other words, like productivity reports and such. They need to have a certain amount of warnings, and a certain amount of tickets written to show they aren't just sitting around in the car doing nothing.

Both sides have a point...every job has productivity records, this is similar. I know in our department, your ticket must be justified, the person must have priors or be going a great deal over the speed limit. Far more warnings are written than tickets.

I can agree with your POV as an officer... however my problem with the posted speed limits are that some of them are COMPLETELY asinine (and seemingly arbitrary)... not all of us are "racers" and speeding for the thrill of it, but just keeping with the general flow of traffic and our surroundings.

Also, nothing is more frustrating than getting caught behind a car that is doing 10 MPH UNDER the speed limit with traffic backed WAY up... both on local streets and on highways where a few cars can back up traffic for miles. (Many a time in backed up traffic I'm going... "Where's the wreck up there... only to find that there is no wreck... just a few slow cars. )

How would you personally define a great deal over the speed limit?

I've noticed there are far more police out this past weekend than I've ever seen any other weekend here, especially on the Turnpike. I guess they like sitting out in the sun just much as any other person.

That will probably get you shot in Southern California.

As far as a great deal over the speed limit, I have always been told that CHP/Police will give you about a 9-10 mph cushion.

i know here in PA, the staties will give you almost 15 over(especially on the turnpike)

Usually it's about 11 around here, especially in MS. But in some parts of LA, as I posted earlier, the speed limit is ridiculously slow (50 mph on a 2-3 lane highway), and going 5-7 mph over the limiit will get you stopped.

I mainly write for anything 12 and over within the city and 15 and over on the highway...that is also depending on the circumstances of prior contacts, and situations. If the flow is going that fast, I dont just pick out a certain vehicle. Also, when it is sunny out, there is more activity. Around here, more kids get there "summer" vehicles out and want to race or just generally go fast...greater need for more units.
