My boss is always kickin it in Europe and would like to get a Treo so that he can receive email while he's there. He thinks that he should be able to get email in Europe with the Treo 650 since it is a quad band phone:

I asked a customer service representative for Cingular and they said that the 700w would not work in Europe because it is a digital phone:

I am not sure if she meant it wouldn't receive email or if it just wouldn't work as a phone either. From the specs it says that it is CDMA 2000. I thought that Europe was covered by CDMA but I could be wrong. Can anyone tell me if they think either one would work in Europe for Data Access? Or is he restricted to Data Access here in the US and phone only in Europe?

Thanks for your insight.

with CDMA, you have to call and activate it from the service provider so I really wouldnt recommend the Treo 700w plus its a little hard finding a unlocked Treo 700w. The Treo 650 is quadband GSM and you can easily get the GSM phone unlocked, You just pop in the sim card and you can start talking right away. If treo doesnt work, check out the T-mobile MDA vario or the I-mate K-jam excellent smartphone with quadband GSM, edge, wifi, bluetooth and windows mobile 5.0

AFAIK europe is GSM. The US and one or two countries are CDMA (or derivatives like PCS).

So the networks are incompatible, I could be wrong though.

I suggest either the T-Mobile SDA or Cingular 8125.
