It’s a sad state of affairs when you buy a new computer these days and it comes pre-loaded with a ton of garbage software that brings your new machine to a crawl. If anyone’s bought a Dell PC in the last few years, you probably know what I’m talking about. Just recently, I was helping a friend set up his brand new Inspiron 1300 and it took FOREVER for it to boot up. It’s a very dissatifiying experience to pull a brand new computer out of the box and be spammed with a bunch of trial software. After removing all of the crap, (wich took a significant amount of time) it booted much faster and performed like it should. I kept thinking it would be nice to have an automated way to remove all this stuff. Thus was born the Dell De-Crapifier script.

EDIT: Somebody at Dell got bent out of shape, evidently... (http://www.yorkspace.com/pc-de-crapifier/)

I set up a new Dell desktop over the weekend - sure coulda used this...

:agree:
We just got a Dimension 3100 last Friday that I had to setup.
All that uninstalling (including having to boot into safe mode to get rid of all the McAfee crap)...*sigh*

every time i get a dell for a family member, i blow it away and do a clean install with the stuff they actually need.

Excellent! I'm going to try it on one of the new machines here and see how it works out. If it hoses it, I'll just re-image it with the image we sent to Dell.

Sweet! It took me over an hour to remove all the crap when I bought a laptop for my mom. Good idea for software.

when i used to work for the computer on campus...the first thing we did before we even gave out the computers was format the damn thing and clean it all out. the staff will install their own spyware and stupid useless programs....

Hmm i just reinstalled using the dell windows disk. And it was fairly clean. I bet the drivers disk has the junk on it.. Cause i copied the drivers folder over to a external hd and didn't use the 2nd disk and its a clean happy machine. :)

But good find anyways.

an iMac, mac mini, and iBook are all affordably priced. A powermac does cost more, but that isnt meant to compete with your typical bestbuy/homebuilt boxes.

You can't buy an iBook for $649 like the Dell E1505.
