Katie Holmes was raised a Catholic, but, says fiance Tom Cruise, their soon-to-arrive baby will not have a Catholic baptism.

"No," Cruise tells Diane Sawyer in an interview on ABC's "Primetime," airing Friday, 9 p.m. EDT. "No, I mean you can be Catholic and be a Scientologist. You can be Jewish and be a Scientologist. But we're just Scientologists."

The 27-year-old Holmes' switch to Scientology has sparked reports of a rift between her devout parents, Ohio natives Martin and Kathleen, and the 43-year-old actor, who introduced her to Scientology.

However, Cruise shrugs off the stories of family friction, telling Sawyer he's close with "the whole family" and "absolutely, yes" they approve of Scientology.

The superstar dad-to-be also confirms to Sawyer that Holmes, in the final stages of her pregnancy with the couple's first child, will adhere to Scientology's practice of quiet birth. Cruise explains that "quiet birth," which aims to minimize talk and other noise inside the delivery room," is "basically just respecting the mother."

"She does what she's gotta do," he explains, addressing speculation that such a practice would somehow muffle Holmes completely and deny her pain medication. "If she needs medicine, she needs medicine."

The star of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible III" has two children, Connor, 11, and Isabella, 13, from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

As the baby's birth approaches, Cruise says "it feels a little unreal."

Cruise said last week that he and Holmes plan to wed in the coming months. They have been engaged since June.

It is rumored that they will proceed with an orthodox scientologist baptism, cleansing the baby in a holy pool of.....

So lemme get this straight...

They are saying that preventing the mother from wincing/crying/shouting/screaming out in pain is a form of "respecting the mother"? :hmm: :thud:

Isn't it funny how Scientology is accepted as a pseduo-religion because of all the celebrities that endorse it? If a bunch of regular people decided to start up a "religion" like this, they would be depicted as cult members faster than you can say David Koresh (sp?).

Man...that's a really good point.

Yeah, for some reason the bigger a group gets, the less cultish it is seen. I see scientology as no more nutty than sacred undergarments or homophobia.

Seems like it's accepted by the media only because they have to in order to get the interviews.

I'm not sure mainstream America actually accepts it as any type of a religion.

Not me. I don't see it as any more of a religion than Star Trek is.

I tell you one thing is for sure, that little unborn child already has a horrible life being planned out for him/her. Tom Cruise may be an actor in demand but his pesonal life, his weird religion and the way he's handling this whole thing - are very scary!! Katie Holmes has been erased as a real person - Big Daddy Tom, is the single spokes person for the entire family and all Scientologist, almost!! I don't have a problem with him "believing" in what he's practicing but I don't care to have it shoved down my throat. Anyway, the baby is the real victim in this case. And Tom would probably have Katie thrown in prison if she decided to leave him and take the baby. He's doens't have a real good track record with relationships so "when" this one ends we'll have to endure his Scientology point of view on divorce and joint custody according to his church/cult - yikes...

I agree. Katie Holmes used to be a hot actress on her way to even bigger stardom. Now she's just Tom's wife. The fact that she abandoned her long-held beliefs for a stupid auditing process using galvanic measurements of the skin and foregoing many medical treatments (yes, mental illness is DEFINITELY a medical illness), is sad. Heck, before he got into acting, Cruise wanted to be a JESUIT.

The water thing is funny. Ever catch that episode of Penn and Teller's BullS#$^?

"No, I mean you can be Catholic and be a Scientologist. You can be Jewish and be a Scientologist. But we're just Scientologists."
Wonder how that works? Can't imagine that the cult/mumbo jumbo of Scientology really meshes well with either Catholicism or Judaism.

I'm with Lolita, they're both cruisy!

The Tomkitten has arrived. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, the high-profile pair dubbed TomKat by the media, had a baby girl Tuesday, said Cruise spokesman Arnold Robinson. The baby, named Suri, weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches long, he said.

"Both mother and daughter are doing well," Robinson said in a prepared statement.

The name Suri has its origins in Hebrew, meaning "princess," or in Persian, meaning "red rose," the statement said.

The baby was born in Los Angeles but the exact location was not disclosed.

It's the first child for Holmes, 27. Cruise, 43, has an adopted daughter and son from his marriage to Nicole Kidman.

Details surrounding the birth, which was planned under the tenets of the Church of Scientology as a silent procedure, weren't disclosed.

Outside the Beverly Hills home where Cruise and Holmes live, about a dozen reporters and photographers stood by. Security officers inside the compound videotaped the journalists.

A security guard at the gate which was shrouded in black to prevent anyone from seeing in refused to release any information. A few cars did arrive and were allowed into the estate. A police motorcycle officer stopped by around 4 p.m. and sat watching the goings-on.

The patrolman, who identified himself as Officer Chase, said he was just making a routine check, since activity around the area had been heightened for some time. He asked if the baby had been born, was told yes, and drove off.

It was just about a year ago that Cruise's romance with Holmes became a world sensation.

Cruise hopped up and down on a couch during an interview with Oprah Winfrey as he professed his love.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," Cruise declared at the time. "Something happened and I want to celebrate it."

The antics were widely mocked but Cruise was unfazed and continued to avow his affection for Holmes.

He and Holmes, a star of TV's "Dawson's Creek," had been first photographed together in Rome in April 2005.

She had previously been engaged to actor Chris Klein; Cruise had been married to Mimi Rogers as well as Kidman, and had dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

In June, Cruise announced to a Paris press conference that he had proposed to Holmes atop the Eiffel Tower.

"Today is a magnificent day for me, I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he said.

No wedding date has been disclosed.

I wonder if a doc, nurse, or at least a competetent midwife was present. I'll never formally endorse any births outside of a hospital, not because I'm a doc, but I've seen bad things happen. Giving birth can be dangerous to mother and child. Foregoing a hospital visit, as the article implies, and keeping to Elron's ideas surrounding such an important event are scary.

Aren't those usually in high risk pregnancies?
