Standing room only, the new way to fly?

Just when you thought the airlines had thought of every possible way to save money. paying for refreshments, checking bags and aisle seats, no more pillows or blankets and higher ticket prices. But now some airplane makers are offering a different money saving idea that would allow airlines to really pack in the passengers.

Airbus is pitching a standing room only airline cabin. The idea is that passengers would be strapped into a padded backboard, allowing dozens of more people to be packed into the same size plane.

So far, no airlines have agreed to try the idea.

There are no legal issues as far as the FAA is concerned. All that agency requires of airlines is that passengers be securely strapped into their seat for takeoffs and landings.

I don't think this will be done. I mean how about a small seat like in those stand up rollercoasters. Maybe...maaaaybe for a short trip...but I can't imagine like a cross country or international flight. It could be a steal if you get a free upgrade.

I'll do that for trips less than three hours as long as it's not a night-flight and the savings are substantial. But anything over that time length and it's not possible.

You know this might actually be easier on my legs than cramming into some of the economy seats out there. Seriously, I wind up standing in the isle for about half my flight anyway just to save my knees.

This is something they considered a while ago, but it was shot down and only recently came to light. NBC Nightly had a section on it last night.

What next... flights where passengers have to "lay down" for the entire flight? :hmm:

That would be to close to resembling the "Middle Passage" from the days of slavery...

I wonder what they plan to do with all the carry-on stuff that would normally go beneath the seat in front of you?

As far as standing for a short trip, no problem. I've had to stand for 45 minute train commutes in Japan.
