Ok, so my girlfriend would like to make her own pasta, so I'm thinking about getting her a pasta machine for her birthday. I have absolutely no idea what to look for in one, anyone have any suggestions? I've found a few on Amazon, but I really don't know what features to look for.

the one they sell at williams sonoma is awesome. cehap ($40, i think) and works beautifully. made in italy. has cool attachments for anything you'd ever want to make... ravioli, lasagna, etc.

and the noodles are awesome. we made some with fresh herbs from the garden one year... you roll them out in the middle of the flat noodles, and they make awsome artwork as they stretch. beautiful christmas gifts.

EDIT: okay, it's $50 now. imperia. you could probably find it cheaper elsewhere.

I have used that one (or one just like it) many times and it does a wonderful job. I wholeheartedly advise you to get one like that rather than the more modern fully automated machines. Look around on the internet as I'm sure you can find them for a better price.

Go with the Imperia. I own one and it makes awesome pasta. The one I have is almost as old as dirt. Every tally that I know owns an Imperia.

Go on ebat and search for pasta machine. You'll find lots of them and a lot cheaper than Williams Sanoma.

On a side note, we were registering for thing for our wedding, and I thought the pasta maker would be cool for my Kitchen Aid mixer, and there was no price so I thought it would be cool. Turned out to be $150 bucks. That's just crazy.

yeah, some of the kitchenaid attachments are waaaay overpriced. i dunno, never used one, but i can't imagine that it works any better than the imperia. it's cheaper to just buy the separate imperia.

My friend has a pasta maker where you dump all the stuff into it, and pasta comes out. sort of like a bread machine, but different.
