PHILADELPHIA -- A fast-food worker tossed a cup of hot grease on a customer, giving the woman second- and third-degree burns on her arms and chest, authorities said.
My skin was cooking," said Vouncile Lambert, 44, who was treated at a hospital.
The 17-year-old worker was charged with aggravated assault. The employee, who had worked at the Checkers restaurant in West Philadelphia for about two months, will be fired, a restaurant manager said Wednesday.
Lambert's 36-year-old niece had spit on the employee, a police report said.
Shaji Joseph, an area manager for the hamburger chain, said the customers were upset when the employee closed the walk-up window on them Sunday afternoon.
"Nobody would just throw grease at somebody without provoking," Joseph said. "(But) we totally understand she can't throw grease on her."

eek. talk about assault... grease burns are bad bidness. nice job, attacking the person who didn't even spit. kinda like putting a bullet in someone's foot because his friend stepped on your toe...

Not saying it was the right thing to do... but without a link to the story, how do we not know if the grease was intended for the niece and the niece ducked or moved out of the way (thereby hitting the Aunt who was standing nearby by accident)?

Anyone who has worked in a commercial kitchen knows that the fryer grease is about the most dangerous thing there. That stuff is just plain nasty to be around. I used to hate having to filter it (still hot) at the end of every night. (You'd hear stories of someone that flinched and ended up filling up their shoe with 350 degree grease.) That employee deserves every assualt charge levied against her.

Hmm, initial reaction was, "Note to self: Don't eat there."
But in reading it through?
"Note to self: Don't freakin' spit on people!"
But then showing that much disrespect is SOOOO far outside my realm of norms or possiblities that it's become, "Note to self: Avoid the stupid people."

What's up with that? I mean the grease throwing is going to bring a hefty lawsuit and it is obviously out of line but when I was 17 if someone would have spit on me - it would have been on.

i probly would have just stood there for a moment... then quit.
i might have thrown a handful of mayonnaise or other non-lethal nastiness first, but only if i was sure my co-workers had my back. i'm not of a stature or skill level to be startin SQUAT.

I think this stuff is just typical of the service you'll get at fast food places around Philly. Don't get me started on the time I had McD's in West Philly.

I am not a big dude at all and I was a smaller when I was 17 but I still would have been pissed enough to return fire. I probably would have done something more like what you said b/c the counter would have been inbetween me and the spitter. I probably would have thrown the cup of pop, that I was drinking, at the customer. Note: At age 17 I was always drinking some type of carbonated sugar and caffeine beverage, so I know I would have had some nearby. :P

i think most people's response to when someone spits on you is "WTF?!?!??!"
as some ppl have pointed out, at 17, a natural reaction would be to be upset. (not justifying, just saying it's understandable). HOWEVER, the cup of grease is wayyyy overboard. so perhaps the class the employee should take is "what are ok things to throw when upset?"
as for the other person, they should take a class on "when it's ok to spit on someone"
in fact, there should be a class called "things you could be doing instead of taking classes on things that you should know better."
btw, guiseppewv it's called SODA....don't make me throw something at you. :P

personally there IS NO GREATER sign of disrepect than being spit on. The grease might have been a little much, but at that point i'm not sure how i would have reacted... pop? maybe, hot sauce to the eyes? better... I would have put my fist through their face first, but i guess this wasn't an option....

Just another in a long list of reasons why I avoid fast food places at all costs.
Subway is still ok in my book, though. :)

sure, but you have to admit this person was highly provoked... I'm of the opinion, once you provoke someone to violence anything short of death is your own damn fault...

If you're not willing to kill and die, you have no right starting a fight.
btw, my opinion is that the person who threw the oil should be jailed. The person who spat should be forced to stand there while the person who got the oil thrown on them should be able to kick the spitter's a$$ (after they get out of the hospital of course).
