Video here (http://www.teamfcf.com/badkarma/Crosswind.wmv)

This little item shows the Boeing factory determining the demonstrated
crosswind landing limits on the 777 and the 747SP. The engineers make
educated guesses, but then the test crews have to go actually prove the
numbers. They sneak off to Brazil to do these tests at a certain remote
BAF airbase famous for its continual atrocious crosswinds...Should the
gear sideloads be excessive and fold one up, there is nobody there to
take nasty pix for the Airbus guys to wave around in the press.

This is some good piloting in getting these planes down. It comes
close to "incredible".... tire change anybody????

If you haven't seen these it's pretty amazing to watch planes of this
size crab walking in on a landing. I can hear the whole crew and the
pilot just yelling "Yeehaaaa" at the top of their lungs.

Note the rudder action on landing.

They're drifting! The last one is crazy.

Also related to aviation, check out my other thread (http://forums.gotapex.com/showthread.php?p=1014294#post1014294).

In the aerospace world, when you fly sideways like that it is called "crabbing."

what a great vid, thanks! when i landed a plane once, i came in sideways like that, but it was because i panicked and hit the wrong rudder pedal... oops.

What the hell is up with the music? That video just ruined that song for me.

intro to flight? fun class! wish I could take it again. I got 1.5 hours under my belt just in case I want to be avi major.

That was some crazy stuff. But was it just me or did the landing gear look like they were slanted?

yeah cheese!! I'm so pissed I never got to stunt the eagle... My instructor, uh... put it through some safety maneuvers with me...

that plane was unreal 13G's!!!!

yeah...I got to fly the eagle. I like the steering wheel flying better than the joystick flying. but the eagle was good times. kong did a little corkscrew dive when I flew with him. it was kick arse.

joystick = fighter pilot!! steering wheel = buick...

how does the plane straighten out after coming in all slanted?

Crazy stuff man....

In-Flight drinks need to be "on the house" after a landing like that.

Is the F15 the one with the non-moveable joystick? Or is that the F18? Always sounded like a good idea to me. A pressure sensitive joystick that it lightweight and therefore less likely to be affected by G-forces.

As far as the video, it rocked. One of those must have had a strong headwind, as it looked like it was hovering. I know it was moving forward, but from the limited (actually no) depth perception, it was hard to tell.

Personally, from flying as a passenger in a 777, I love the plane. I'm 6' and can stand up under the bins without much difficulty. Pretty quiet too. I was first concerned about flying across the Atlantic in a twin engine, but then I found out it could both take off and land with only one working. That's cool.

H <---hasn't taken flying lessons....yet. Gotta save up some $$. Always wanted to learn how and get some airtime.

the "eagle" we're discussing isn't the f15 eagle. It's this little tandem wing stunt plane made in australia or something, but it does have a joystick. just clearing stuff up i hope you weren't confused and I was...

Where's the "crapped my pants" smilie again?

That last landing was nuts. Gotta have some big cajones to be one of the test pilots...

Ah, gotcha. Just figured since we were talking about big jets that the eagle in question was the fighter. Didn't know about the Aussie one.

Still, pressure-sensitive non-mobile joysticks are kewl.
