So, I have an Asus A8n5x mainboard, amd 3000+ athlon, ati x800, maxtor sata harddrive etc.

I think I screwed up. I connected the power supply (thermaltake) and setup the video card, cdrom drive, and harddrive. Just the basics, I wanted to make sure the components were live before adding everything. I hit the power button, and I hear a loud pop, I see the spark and it was where the power switch was connected to the mainboard. I power off immediately.

The instructions weren't clear, but on the power switch connector, I put the connector with the tiny little arrow on it to the pin that was the power pin, NOT the ground pin. Was this the wrong way to do it? Neither the mainboard or case instructions specified how to insert.

So now I'm pretty sure the video card is a goner. What about the mainboard and CPU, any chance they could have survived? I haven't turned it on again, but the power thing is plugged in, and the mainbboard LED is green.

I guess my questions are, what's the correct way to insert the power switch, and is there any chance that my mainboard and cpu survived. Thx.

Well when you plug the motherboard power cable in, it should snap (a click sound) It usually doesnt damage the mobo, The system just wouldnt power on.
I am sure, you can RMA the board if it had got messed up and get a replacement if its within the warranty. CPU should be good... I once had water leak inside my system and damage the motherboard and video card. The CPU was just fine nothing happened to it. So I guess your CPU should be good but there are chances. How are you so sure that the video card got fried?? See if you can get a spare power supply and test it out.

Well, I took the video card out and put it in the old system. It booted up, but no video. Took a different card and put it in, and the old system came back to life, so that's why I thought it was fried.

However, I cleaned the video card up, and put it back in this morning, and low and behold it works, so maybe my other stuff is ok too.

I've got to get my hands on some new memory now, if the RAM is jacked, it may be causing the system not to boot.
