so I don't know if this goes under a differnt topic...but oh well...I'll post it here.

so did anybody watch the last episode of numbers? well...in the ending the math genius said a dried spaghetti noodle will ALWAYS snap in three or more segments. well...I just proved him wrong!!! I just broke a noodle of dried spaghetti into 2 pieces! FANCY THAT!!!!

to snap a noodle, you have to hold the noodle at the ends. not at the middle. try it out!!!

I've heard of this theory also way back on boing boing. If you compress dried spaghetti it breaks in 3 segments or more. I think the reason they said was a 'shockwave" travels the length of the spaghetti and breaks it at various weak points.

I think this is a silly theory that simply tries to make an obvious fact (spaghetti is very brittle) sound interesting and scientific. Sorta like saying a dish dropped on the floor will always break into more than two pieces.

Well I think it's a phenomenon that applies to specific materials and shapes. For instance if you get a strip of paper and make two identical cuts about 95% of the way and pull, you won't get two tears. Just two pieces of paper and one of them has a hanging chad.
