i have had photoshop 7.0 for a number of years now, but have never used it. i wanted to start learning the basics of photoshop but have no idea where to start. ive tried reading books on them but they are just too confusing. i was wondering how most you photoshop users learned to use this program. did you take a class? get books? or just mess around with it on your own? if there is a website that maybe just teaches you basics, like what each button does and such in easy ways, that would be great. thanks in advance.

Lynda.com is a good place to start. You could also use the built in tutorials that come with Photoshop. I wouldn't recommend just trying to mess around with it to learn it, as it is counterintuitive for the first-time user. Also, since Photoshop 7 is a couple of generations old, I bet you could find books on it at the library or even online.

i started messing around with it on my own back in the days of Photoshop 2.5.
Since then, I've used some books and tutorials on the net for more advanced stuff.

I actually took a Photoshop class... that my job paid for (one of the perks of being in Web Development in the "early years")
Pretty much that training has paid for itself many times over. :D
