Our kitchen stove (came with our house when we bought it about 10 years ago) has been getting troublesome. The oven temperature was hard to regulate. Two of the burner knobs had crumbled (probably because the oven door didn't shut as tightly as it should). The oven was one of those "continuous cleaning" (i.e., never clean) failures. My wife had mentioned that it would be nice if we could replace it, but doing so seemed pretty far out as we are still dealing with the burden of medical bills from recent months. Well, yesterday my wife was dropping her dad off at his home after my son's volleyball game. I got a call from her that someone had a range out at the curb that looked OK. She asked someone at the house if it was working - there was only a teenage guy there, but he said they had been using it up until the day before. It was the right size and color for our kitchen, so we brought it home. I got a new flexible gas connector (the one we had was way older than the coated stainless types required now), hooked it up, and bingo - everything works. Plus, this one is self cleaning, and has the timed oven cooking (which our old one didn't). The icing on the cake was that we put our old one out at the curb last night (today was trash day), and someone had picked it up by this morning (otherwise we would have to get a $10 sticker for it to be collected). :)

Woot... you are officially Fred Sanford/Roc (hunting for "perks" in the trash) now. :D

Gotta love FREE and working... I just hope your house doesn't explode or something (as to wondering why it was tossed in the first place.)

Well, this stove isn't some grand prize - it's older. And the house looks like they've been doing some recent remodelling - I figure they just got something shiny new and needed to get rid of the old one.

Cool... I'm just saying "be careful"... cause messin' with gas is no joke.

I appreciate the note of caution. I've worked with these things a lot in the past - installing stoves, hot water heaters, etc. Seal the joints, check for leaks, let your nose do it's job. In the case of this oven, I made sure that the pilotless igniters did their job, since those are one of the more common points of failures.
