Today, the publisher revealed a partial song list for Guitar Hero II. Besides "Arterial Black," an original recording by Drist, it will include covers of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs," KISS' "Strutter," Rush's "YYZ," Reverend Horton Heat's "Psychobilly Freakout," Van Halen's "You Really Got Me," and Butthole Surfers' "Who Was in My Room Last Night"
They've also announced Primus's John the Fisherman. (the master track.)

Here's a demo at E3:

I have to say, so far, I'm not impressed. The only song that sounds fun to me is War Pigs, as I'm not a huge fan of Kiss or the Butthole Surfers. I outright despise Primus and Rush.
I want to see them put some bands in there from the grunge days (Nirvana and AIC) and NWoBHM. How about some Black Crowes or CCR? maybe throw some Godsmack or System of a Down on there for newer stuff. I'm blown away they haven't picked up any Seger. I'd love some early metallica but I don't think that'll happen with the way the band controls their music.
Some other cool features:
They have announced that you'll be able to play coop 2 player, where one person can play bass. Plus in 2 player mode, each player can play at different difficulty levels.
What are you hoping for in the game?

I wanted to buy guitar hero, but I'm not a big fan of hard rock and metal. Are there any soft rock songs in either version with sweet accoustical guitar licks?

oh dude...hard rock and metal songs are the only songs with good riffs and licks! I don't know if I should qualify it with ONLY...I guess I should have said the majority.

rush has GREAT guitar work, i dunno how you don't like them, but to each his own. and i kinda agree about primus, the bass work (Les Claypool is amazing) is much better

I played this on Thursday at E3, wasn't that great. I mean...well being a guitar player and all, I'd rather do the real thing.
I was really disappointed with the characters not moving their hands up and down the fretboard. They just stand there around the 9th/12th fret hovering their hand.
I'll just add into here some highlights as don't really seem fit for its own thread:
THQ's Compnay of something(forgot name) - WW2 RTS is awesome. Best graphics I have ever seen for a RTS and this one is very realistic. Don't miss this.
Rainbow Six: Las Vegas - Very impressed, something that is a must to buy. Graphics and the tactical gameplay was amazing. The screenshots you see on the net are how it actually looks.
Medieval Total War II - Awesome so far, I believe I was playing the alpha? Was impressed by what they had in there already at this stage. Definately 10x's better than Rome, and Rome was a great game already.
The biggest jump forward is that the units actually fight one on one, instead of how Rome you would see just a clump of people swinging and a few walking in the middle of a cohort doing nothing and not being hit. These guys will actually fight once near an enemy. Also, if the ones die in the front, the ranks in the back will actually move up to take their place. Alot of detail going into this version. This was my favorite there at the show. Plus got a shirt :D
WoW XP: I see this everyday so can't count it as a highlight :p but still was great to talk to people and see their reaction while showing it off. If you guys play WoW, it will definately blow you away. All the content is amazing.
GW: Factions - Was interesting to play this. I liked some of the PVP concept and how you can take over various locations, etc. I may consider picking this up down the road to try it out again.
Everything else was ok, nothing that comes to mind. I only got around to the West and South halls, I was working in the West so that was where I stayed most of the time. South hall was a disappointment, nothing great there.
A friend told me that there are a few Korean MMO's that were down in the smaller halls that looked very impressive and played great. These are 3rd gen MMO's and there was one from Ausie as well. Forgot the names but may be something to look for in the future.
Really mad I forgot to check out Brothers in Arms new expansion, oh well. I can't believe it slipped my mind. :(
Adios.

Take their singer and rip out his voice box and I'd be able to start liking Rush. I hear their drummer is unbelievable.
I've heard good things about Primus's bass playing, but their music just flat out bores me.
Gear, there were requests for acoustic work, but the game is mostly based on "rock 'n roll" type music. There are a few songs you may like. I have to admit I didn't like a lot of the songs on their playlist until I bought the game. They suddenly become less irritating to me when I'm the one playing them.
David Bowie - "Ziggy Stardust"
Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out"
Queens of the Stone Age - "No One Knows"
ZZ Top - "Sharp Dressed Man"
Queen - "Killer Queen"
Stevie Ray Vaughn - "Texas Flood"
Boston - "More Than A Feeling"
Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Higher Ground"
Sum 41 - "Fat Lip"
Cream - "Crossroads"
Edgar Winter Group - "Frankenstein"
You can listen to clips here if some don't sound familiar:
http://www.guitarherogame.com/music.asp
There's a bunch of other bonus songs from bands I've never heard of as well.
GH2 has gotten a lot of requests for acoustic songs, but I don't know if they are going to follow through with it.
Hey Blitz, if the demo you saw at e3 was the same demo I saw in some preview clips, fear not. That demo looked just like the first demo for the original. They add the whistles and bells in as last steps. (Even the notes looked crappy on the version I saw.)

Ok good :woohoo: I was so disappointed when I went in there. I just got a pin for my shirt and left :munch: Good to hear tho!

Hey, Primus does the Southpark theme song, so they can't be all bad :)

Are the songs on the game performed by the real artists or did their hire covers?
I know that Karaoke Revolution had cover artists rather than original artists...

They are covers -- though pretty good ones at that. :)

Not the bonus songs. Those are master tracks. GH2 may have more master tracks as well. Primus for example, is a master track.

because when you want to ROCK tonight you play guitar hero, it would take years to learn to rock the real way. isn't that the joy of games? vicarious role-playing?

Heh... that is how I feel about *all* sports related games. Why just go out to the park and play a real game of basketball???
I played this for the first time the other night. I must say, this is an AWESOME party game. Pretty much anyone will step up to play it after they watch a few people try and it's a TON of fun. Needless to say, I will be buying it tomorrow.

Also there are a handful of songs that were recently seen in a GH2 demonstration, they can be found here (http://forum.guitarherogame.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=5783).
In addition to tons of songs, Guitar Hero 2 will also have new modes, primarily of the multiplayer variety. You can now cooperatively play through the game as teammates rocking out. One player plays the lead guitar while the other player takes care of the bass lines and rhythm guitar (I think this was mentioned in a post above too).
There will also be a practice mode to learn the tough chops.
Badass.
Some more general information can be found in the Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Hero_2).
I'm counting down the days.
* Check out how tricky 'Misirlou' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jRWTuxvwBg) (the Pulp Fiction theme) looks....and this is only on hard, not expert!
Also, I'm not sure why this isn't included on that official list yet, FREE BIRD has been confirmed.

misirlou doesn't look that bad, though I'm not so good at strumming.
I'm digging the three button cords.
I'm not as wild about this song list as I was the last one. Oh well.
