It's not nearly as good as the thread title, I'm afraid. Actually, it's quite sad they suspended her for this stupid crap. This version was around 20 years ago and they're singling this girl out. I used to sing a version of the Snow White Dwarves song with similar content. It was just young fun, I never wanted to go to school with "razor blades and hand grenades, hi ho...hi ho hi ho hi ho..."

Oh well, at least I'm out of school.

Girl suspended for song about shooting teacher
‘On Top of Ol’ Smokey’ spoof gets Georgia teen five-day punishment

SUWANEE, Ga. - A high school student was suspended for five days after singing a spoof of "On Top of Ol' Smokey" that includes lyrics about shooting a teacher.

Beth Ann Cox, 16, a junior at Peachtree Ridge High School, said she had been humming the song during German class but denied singing loudly or directing the lyrics at her teacher, Phil Carroll.

"I'd had a song stuck in my head all day, like the tune of it," she said. "This kid in front of me asked me about the song. So I told him the words. I didn't say them loudly."

The song includes the lyrics: "On top of Ol' Smokey, all covered with blood, I shot my poor teacher with a .44 slug."

Sloan Roach, spokeswoman for Gwinnett County schools, located about 30 miles northeast of Atlanta, disputed Cox's version of events. Roach said the student was discussing a grade with her teacher when she began singing the song out loud in class.

Administrators pulled Cox out of class later Friday and asked why she had threatened her teacher. She was suspended Monday.

Cox has had differences with the teacher in the past, said her mother, Suzanne Cox.

"We feel that Dr. Carroll has some kind of a vendetta out for our daughter. And he used this to take a stand against her," Suzanne Cox said.

Roach said the suspension was "appropriate disciplinary action" for disrupting class.

*sigh* -- thank goodness I'm out of school as well. Ever since Columbine, everyone's gotten so paranoid (for better or for worse).

Don't get me wrong -- the Columbine massacre was a major tragedy - but I also think paranoia isn't the right solution. Just blurt out the word "gun" and you're suspended? Geez.

She deserves a lot more than just a suspension. For humming during a class that is. Do these kids have any common sense or respect for anybody?

what, are you crazy? You've never had a song stuck in your head and found yourself humming it?

And 5 days? Gimmie a break.

not in class. nor did i say out loud the lyrics to a fellow student who asked me during class either.

i hate these stories because you never know if you are getting the whole story. i mean if this girl is humming out loud in class and talking out loud while the teaching is trying to teach i'd bet she has done disruptive things in class before this and been warned to knock it off. i highly doubt she is an
and look at her parents trying to say it's a vendetta the teacher has against their child cause their wittle baby girl does no wrong.

My opinion probably comes from my cultural background. It's a lot different now, but when I grew up, if anybody had done that, among many other things, in any class in any school anywhere in my country, they'd be out in the hallway in a matter of seconds on the ground getting treated by a two by four. And that was considered the social norm. So I understand that my opinion could have come across quite strong to somebody who even considers it acceptable to be singing in class. I apologize if I offended you.

Suspended? This brings the chicken nugget case to mind. Sheesh.

Learned this one in 2nd grade.

Glory, Glory, Hallelujah,
Teacher hit me with a ruler
I hit her in the butt
With a rotten coconut
And my teacher ain't my teacher no more.

My eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school
We have tortured every teacher
We have broken every rule
Then we hung the principal and that's the end of school
Us kids go marching on!

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Teacher hit me with a ruler
I hid behind the door
With a loaded .44
And she ain't my teacher no more!

...

Yeah, this article brought back memories. The version I remember had:

Glory, Glory, Hallelujah,
Teacher hit me with a ruler
I hit her on the bean
With a rotten tangerine
And her teeth came marching out.

and there is not a teacher who hasn't heard it before. We keep treating every kid like a potential columbine, and pretty soon, that's exactly what they all will be.

Nah, I agree with you that singing in class is wrong. And the brat deserves to be punished for that. (She probably was antagonizing the teacher.) But punish her for the song is IMO asinine.

Give her a detention for disturbing the class and keep it out of the papers, I say.

nothing wrong with demanding respect. like i've said, i'm sure this isn't the first time the 16 y/o was disrespectful in class.

what would you think if your child felt it was cool to be disruptive and hum in middle of class and then say the lyrics out loud to a classmate who asked while class was in session? i think anyone who does this is asking for trouble.
