You might be sick for any number of other reasons, but not for this one... I thought the same thing.

When I read about the Nigerian pipeline explosion, I immediately wondered about the potential effect on gasoline prices. Nigeria is the 7th largest oil producing country in the world, and the 5th largest supplier to the US. I don't know what percentage of the Nigerian supply is involved with this particular pipe, but these days it seems like ANY such news will drive the oil futures price up.

[edit: I hadn't read the same story that you linked above. Man, that story sure focuses on the carnage. The story I read mentioned 200 killed, but didn't get into the graphic details.]

So wait... there were 200 people all gathered around the pipeline, waiting to steal their "share"? How does a group that size organize without local authorities finding out? Or were they in on it? Maybe there is something I am missing...

Yup. You missed the part about them being in Nigeria...

I am pretty sure that the death of 200 people is not going to make you pay more money at the gas pump. They probably took that into consideration before they did it. "What will this do to Airencracken if this thing blows up in our faces?"

I had the exact same thought when I read the article. I bet gas goes up .20 a gallon...

were all 200 people theives? if a pipeline explodes like that, i would imagine that it could be a bigger area where innocent people would be killed as well. :(

Sadly, this is not an unusual event in Nigeria. Pipeline pilfering (and subsequent fires) has killed (not so innocent) people many times over the years. One sad thing about Nigeria is that in spite of the tremendous revenue that oil can generate, high-level corruption has kept the general population of the country from the benefits of it.

Great. Now my Baker is going to be mad again about having to gas up the delivery van.

Nope, you're just like the rest of us, selfish and self-centered but not sick. You didn't want bad things to happen to others, you just don't want anything to badly affect your life and your ease/convenience is much more important an issue to you than the lives of others... same here. I'm not saying that given the choice you would necessarily choose a benefit to you over the lives of others but that would be your first reaction. We are inherently self-centered. Society does it's best to control that with laws, and social pressures so that we don't destroy ourselves but it doesn't change who we are deep inside. Heck, everytime I see a hot chick, I'm not thinking of how I can best help her, I think of what I want to do to benefit myself and then stop myself by knowing that were I to do that there is a good chance I would go to jail.
