so here is the deal...I'm gonna be going to hong kong for the next few years. anywho...I have a few questions about moving over seas.
1) my brother is still going to be in the US, so I'm gonna be sending all my bank statements etc etc to his house while I'm over seas. But I still want to keep my drivers license, so it's gonna be registered at my brothers place. anywho...what do I do about jury duty if I get summoned?
2)what happends when I vote? can I still vote in absentia? but only in the county I'm registered for I guess.
3)how do I file my taxes?
I'm very confused about this stuff...

*IF* you get summoned for jury duty, just fill out the little please-don't-make-me-do-this form explaining that you're on extended business over seas. I'm sure they'd let you off.

Yah, just do it that way...same as servicemen/women who are serving over seas.
3)how do I file my taxes? No idea, seek professional advice.

If you get summoned just say you are out of the country fleeing a felony warrant.

3)how do I file my taxes?
I would guess that you have to file wherever you're intaking an income. Talk to a tax professional about it, because it's probably going to be messy.

3)how do I file my taxes?
The tax part can be fairly simple depending on your situation.
Don't file US taxes until you can show proof of residency in the new country or pass the physical presence test (spent 330 days in the past year there).
The IRS deals with this frequently. If you are abroad, you get an automatic 2 month extension. If you need more time, just file the normal extension that you would always file, and you will get the extra 4 months. For most people, this will carry them through when they can pass the physical presence test.
Then, there are two possible routes depending on the amount of money you earned abroad . . . 1) If you earned < $80k in the year 2) If you earned > $80k per year.
1) If you earned less than $80k, you get an automatic exemption on the US taxes for that. Things are pretty basic from there . . . Turbo Tax should be able to pretty easily handle it.
2) If you earned more than $80k, it gets more difficult. I would definitely suggest seeing an accountant if this applies to you. You have to file your local country taxes first. Then, depending on how much taxes you paid in the local country, you may or may not owe taxes in the US (you receive a credit for overseas taxes paid, so basically if their tax rates are lower than the US, you should owe . . . if they are higher than the US, you should be in the clear) . . . but you should really have a professional do it . . .
I would also definitely suggest a pro if you have investment income, etc. . .
As for nuts and bolts, you can't e-file while abroad, but there is one IRS center that collects all foreign tax returns . . .
As for State/local taxes, you're on your own . . . if it's < $80k, it should be pretty simple with Turbo Tax . . . if it's > $80k . . . you're already seeking a pro . . .

THANK YOU BUTCH!!! this has mucho helped me out! I already use turbo tax, so hopefully it can deal with me overseas. I'll definatly be under $80 /yr. so I think everything should be good.
but does it matter that I have all my mail at my brothers address? hmmm...we'll see I guess.

Publication 54 is the document that you will want to read about filing taxes over seas.
Link (http://www.irs.gov/publications/p54/index.html)
This only applies to you if you are out of the country for a minimum of 330 days out of 365. Your state taxes will vary depending on where your “domicile” is. Hopefully your brother lives in a state that does not have an income tax.
