They're all over eBay for $20. Anybody have recommendations/experiences with a particular brand or style?

Nah.. no particular recommendations, they just work or they don't.
I have generic one that I bought awhile back that has like 6 LEDs on it... if they light up, the P/S is good... if they don't, the P/S is garbage.

Are there any that actually load a power supply? Or do the generics draw enough amperage to find marginal power supplies? I replaced a failed PS last night that was causing blue screens and stop errors on a W2K box - it hadn't failed completely...

Pretty much that should work to test the various leads from your P/S or it will tell you which ones are bad.
