they are real..I wonder if anyone here has ever seen one up close and personal. I can't imagine the smell..kind of like a dead New York State Deer that is bloating and oozing in the sweltering sun of Route 81.

n Arum Titan specimen. Thousands of Germans have flocked to a botanical garden to witness the freak appearance of three flowers on the giant member of the lily family, notorious for its revolting smell.

cheeky writers.

I don't remember much, but it smelled bad. Here's a link to one that was at my school.

Note that it's called the amorphophallus.

The stinky but fascinating Titan Arum, or "corpse flower," that's long flourished in the Cal State Fullerton Arboretum will bloom within the next few days, campus officials say.

It will be the first time in about three years that the flower has bloomed and produced a striking stench that the public finds oddly attractive. Thousands of people visited the arboretum the last time this happened.

"The corpse flower ... is native to the rain forests of central Sumatra in Indonesia," says Paula Selleck, a campus spokeswoman. "When the plant flowers, it produces a stench, presumably to attract insects that normally feed on dead animals, such as flies and carrion beetles. The insects then carry pollen from one plant to another, pollinating the plant's flowers."

Selleck says the public can view the flower free of charge from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. daily at the arboretum's Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum, 1900 Associated Road, Fullerton.

The flower should bloom in 2-3 days and readers can keep track of its status at www.arboretum.fullerton.edu

Ah yes, the one I talked about in my earlier post. Like I said, it reeks something awful, but it's still sort of cool.
