I've been thinking about applying for those 5% back on gas credit cards. I currently only get 1% back. I read the fine print on the Blue Cash one and you have to spend more than $6500 in one year to earn the 5% and 1% on every other purchase otherwise it's 1% on gas and 0.5% on everything else. So does that mean the first $6500 earns the lower rate and everything over that threshold earns the higher rate? Or once you hit the threshold than your total yearly purchases has the higher rate applied to it.

I don't remember seeing a Visa card that offers a higher rate until I got gas at a BP station (used to be Amoco). They are offering 10% on gas(purchased at BP stations onlu), 4% on travel and dining and 2% on everything else for the first 60 days. Then after that it's halved. Bonus if you spend $1000 in first 3 months and get $75 GC.

For those interested it's www.newbpvisa.com if you want to sign up. Thoughts? A deal? Deal post worthy?

I'm using a citicard right now, and unlike bluecash (which I also have), the 5% starts whenever you use the car. (there is no limit like bluecash). AS far as your bluecash question. I've never had my card up to 6500, so I wouldn't know the answer to your question.

but I would recommend the citicards card for your gas needs. (every gas station)

Yup... I have the Citicard as well, and mine gives the 5% back on grocery store purchases as well. Might call em and see if this one does the same.

Citicard is the way to go for this deal...

You got it right the first time... so for the first $6500, you only make 0.5-1%, and then after $6500, you make 1-5%. Although, I believe the 5% also covers groceries. And there are additional benefits, like a free extended warranty, etc. Not the best gas card... if you use Shell, I like their gas card the best. Otherwise, checkout the Discover gas card... I believe (but don't quote me on it), that you get a full 5% the whole time... and you can "double" it if you purchase gift cards from their preferred merchants.

It starts at 5%, but steps down to 3% after something like $1500 of gas (unlike the Discover 1% rebate, that starts at .25% and steps up as you spend more). I use Discover primarily for gas, and the Citi card for groceries (since it has a $300/year max dividend).

so far you guys have everything right. don't forget the advanta card and if you don't mind rewards (for the things you guys end up buying anyway) the chase perfect card is a point higher in the savings.

IIRC, the Citi Dividends Platinum MasterCard has a $150 annual cash back cap.
