Software to edit mpg & mpg2 files

I use my cap card to record stuff from my tv and dvr's. I'd like to be able to edit the commercials out. Right now, I can record on regular, low-quality settings and get a regular mpg then edit with TMPGEnc and it's fine. But I'd like to record in a bit higher quality (I did one in dvd standard play and it is nice quality but it's an mpg 2 apparently so the TMPGEnc won't edit it.).

Any suggestions?

when i recorded transport stream files either as .ts or mpg files) from an HD DVR to my PC, i used HDTVtoMPEG2 (http://www.eecs.umich.edu/%7Ebalazer/HDTVtoMPEG2/index.html) to edit out the commercials.

Videoredo is a program designed to easily cut out commercials. Very easy to use. You can check their website at www.videoredo.com

well, if the file is mpeg2 (and i think regular mpg files also), it should be able to read and edit it.

i'm not an expert in the software area, but MPEG video is notoriously hard to edit , hence the scarcity of good MPEG video editors out there. The reason for it is because the video is stored as three different types of frames, intra frames, forward predictive frames and bidirectional predicted frames. Intraframes contain most of the data, and the P and B frames are distance vectors that store only the differences of the current frame from the I frame. A sequence of 15 frames can look like I_BB_P_BB_P_BB_P_BB_P_BB_ .

So an MPEG editor has to look forward AND backward several frames, and extrapolate data for B and P frames that don't have complete data (like an I frame would).
