Does Viagra Keep Flowers From Wilting?
12 May 2006
The Experiment
Viagra (sildenafil citrate) has a firmly established ability to keep the male organ erect. But you might be surprised to learn that it has also been used in the laboratory to keep cut flowers from going limp. With Mother’s Day coming up, we decided to test this out for ourselves and find out if the same pill that keeps Dad’s woody from wilting can keep Mom’s mums looking perky. We also compared two other chemical additives recommended by household hints sites for keeping flowers fresh – vodka and Sprite.

I had heard about thls not too long after Viagra came out. I think to dramatize the effect they used tulips. One, umm, straight up, and the other , uh,, leaning over.
Found an article- no pictures, from 2000, about Viagra and plants wilting. http://www.cbc.ca/story/news/?/news/1999/07/18/viagra990718

Heh...interesting. I doubt if Viagra has any real impact, as it has nothing to do with anything erecting in general. It just opens blood vessels. Maybe a similar effect or a similar chemical could be used to keep plant stalk pores open?

That's the generally hypothesis: big pores means the plant keeps getting water. Who knows if it'll work.

Yeah...I'm just not sure that Viagra has any effect on plant vasculature. Not sure how much nitric oxide is a factor.

I'd love to see the lame fools who eat the flower vase powder in hopes of getting... happy.

Hah! Drink the vase contents! Hmmm...flat Sprite with a stemmy taste.

What I was thinking is that if viagra works for plants, maybe

will work for people ;)
