Tranny noise.

My car is almost at the 100,000 mark and still leak free after a oil pan gasket replacement. Recent I've been hearing this almost like metal to metal rub I think is originating from the transmission. How did I figure it's from the tranny? Well when I engage the clutch the noise goes away. I was thinking of just changing out the tranny oil this weekend to see if that's the problem. Any other suggetions? Is the noise just due to old age? or is it time for a new clutch? Once in awhile I grind the gears by not engaging the gears fully but I doubt thats the case since I do it about 6< a year. Syncros can't be swinning in there can it?

oh yeah the last time I change tranny oil was at 40,000 with Honda brand tranny oil.

Well, when I had a noise in the trans and it went away with the clutch disengaged, it was the input shaft bearing, or it could be the pilot bushing/bearing.

So, you're saying it makes noise when you have the clutch pedal depressed, and it stops when your foot's off the clutch?

Or vice versa?

Just trying to get my mind around when you hear it...

when I let off the clutch it makes noise and when I depress it does not.

You guys think it's the throw bearing? How long should I drive this car until I get it fixed? lately I've been using my cruise control I wonder if that's the cause of the problem. The max I used cruise control is about 30min max.

Sounds like throwout bearing to me - that's a classic symptom of a rough spot on the bearing in that it is quiet loaded but noisy unloaded. At 100K, not unusual if the car's never had a clutch replacement...

Now if I can get labor around $200.oo ish I would be a happy camper.

So a new clutch/pressureplate/throwout bearing fixed it, right?

I'm still getting this scrapping noise but its not like before when it sounds like metal pieces shaking around in there. Does it take time to break in? The noise goes away when I step on the clutch. Thanks for the check up.

I've never heard a completely silent throwout bearing. You also may have a trans input shaft bearing that's a little noisy.

I should of taken a picture of that clutch. There was alot of abbrasion on the fingers of the clutch close to the opening of the circle. hope that makes sense

I'd just keep a listen on it - if it changes pitch or seems to get worse I'd do something with it.

The fingers you mention is where the throwout bearing rides - when you push the clutch pedal in, the throwout bearing is pushed into these fingers which in turn unload the pressure plate springs and disengage the clutch.

Have you changed your tranny fluids? There is a magnet in the bottom of the pan. You will see some metal shavings around the magnet, but there shouldn't be a tremendous amount. An excessive amount would lead me to think you need a tranny rebuild.

I had it changed at 40K-ish. I am going to do it again this weekend.

I use to never really hear my gears when I downshift but dang. Time for a new car; good read now I know what the damn master cylinder is.....
