02 explorer transmission help

This started when we mentioned we were going to sell the darn thing off because donnie is leaveing and we don't want two payments while he is gone (I didn't want two payments to begin with but that is a different thread)

The issue started happening a couple days ago. The O/D light started to flash. Then go off, then come back and the transmission wouldn't go up into (what we think is) third. We take it to Aamco - they drive it and hook it to the computer - third is gone, and the main cellinoid is gone. He did say that the cellinoid could be causing the other code but wouldn't know unless they open the trans up and look (sealed transmission). They wanted $700 and could cost $4000+ if we go with a new trans.

Called the ford dealership. They said for $170 they would open it up and look and see what was wrong. We drove from Aamco to Ford and they kept it overnight. They called just now and they did the same damn thing - drove and hooked it up to the system - same codes - they didn't open it up. The tech said it wasn't neccesary since the computer told him what is wrong. But that wasn't what we were told would be done! They are telling us the same price.

We owe $10,500ish on it, a little less actually but that is a good round number. And that is what it is worth in GOOD condition off KBB.com (10,260). In FAIR condition (using their little fill in the dot form), it is worth $8,950.

Any help advice? I need a soundboard and ya'all are it.

i'd take it back to the dealership and raise a stink - they should have cracked like they said. if you have it in writing, you can stick it to them. after opening up the tranny - they should have a definitive answer. if it's a "cheap" fix go ahead. if it's expensive- i'd think about getting out of this car asap.....it would cost you almost half of what you owe to keep it...that's too much. i guess there's no warranty on it either....

it would be worth about 8k to get rid of it or 14k to keep it.....

my 2 cents

nope, not in writing- guy talked it several times, wrote short hand on the important paper and I didn't read over donnie's shoulder - we were just relieved that they were going to open it up!

Read the relase papers today - they actually mention the fix that is online - a loose or broken band (an 18 dollar part!!!) inside the trans. and that we declined the fix! They never mentioned that to us! They wanted us to plop down $5000 for a new transmission! We looked up that fix when we got home and was heated.

Going to call Furd tomorrow and complain about the service dept.

New question. Donnie's dad knows mechanics up in Fallon (7 hr drive). Once that first shift is done, it shifts/down shifts fine the rest of the time which leads us to think that the band is loose and not broken- would it be safe to drive it up there?

I am not at all familiar with the insides of late-model Ford automatic transmissions, but is there not more than one Ford dealer in metro LV?

AAMCO = All Automatics Must Come Out

I'll see if I can find you a good Indy trans shop...

Thanks Mike

When we get back from Fallon (without taking the truck up- I did talk him and his dad out of that one ) and we get some extra money, I will take it to them. Donnie is hoping that they will drop the pan, dran the fluid, check the band, tighten/replace the band and seal it back up without a big hassle. I hope so too.

Of course this doesn't stop him from searching the internet and saying that he and his dad could do this if they could buy the special pump needed, have a place to do it, time before he left...

He is a good man, and good at fixing a lot of things, but sometimes, I have to talk him down LOL

Well, Donnie took it in. They were good guys, but won't just drop the pan And I kinda like them more for it

It's gonna cost $1800-2400 + taxes to fix it. They will go in and basically rebuild it. It's gonna take me about 4 months while paying off a couple bills to get the money for it so it looks like we will keep the truck and not sell it- for now. I don't want this happening again and from what we have read up on, it does happen again and again with this transmission. I am going to keep my eye on the KBB trade in on it and see what happens. There goes making double payments on the car

He did say that it does seem the band is loose. It shifts fine 1-2. If you let up on the gas, and then go again, it skips 3 and goes into 4th which told him that the band is loose and not broken (because we still have 4th). He said we can drive it until the band breaks (not happening).
