Thumbs down Flex-Fuel cars

its my understanding from 2 guys i spoke to last night. you get worst millage when you switch from gas to alterative fuels in any of todays cars. they said dont by a flex fuel car becouse you will actally get loose MPG and it cost you a bunch more money. not only are the cars costing more to buy. but the fuel is not saving you anything in mpg or at the pump . i not looked but is the cost of alternave fuels more costly then gas ?

Dude... do you get passing grades in English class or had you been drinkin' ?

Anyways... E85 fuel is supposed to be less expensive than regular gas. Some places it's much cheaper, some places don't have that big a difference. And it has less energy per gallon than gas, so it will not get you as far when compared to regular gas (gallon for gallon).

Dave.

Here's the scoop. Most people who have flex fuel cars or trucks don't buy them for that reason. Manufacturers make a lot of engines flex fuel and if you buy that size engine, you just get it. A lot of people drive a flex fuel vehicle and don't even know it.

E85 can be less or more expensive depending on the are you buy it, but generally it is a little less expensive per gallon. Unfortunately, you will get worse mileage on E85 so even though you pay less per gallon, it costs more per mile to use. Add to that that over long periods of time it is actually corrosive to your engine and you have a real winner.

My shop used to have an account with the state of Ca. and they've been using those flex fuel vehicles since they came out. The garage has never fueled the vehicles with anything but unleaded, and I always thought it was odd to purchase the vehicles for the state if they weren't going to use anything but the unleaded fuel so maybe they just got deals on the vehicles.

The auto companies get a break on their CAFE requirements when they sell flex fuel vehicles even though they get horrible gas mileage with the stuff or if no one ever puts it in their tanks.

It's a joke.

Here's what the Feds have to say about a flex fuel 2006 Dodge Caravan. It makes for an interesting gasoline vs. E85 comparison...

The link states E85 to cost $2.40 per gallon. In reality, with the subsidy which the government provides at about 50 cents per gallon, the actual cost is $2.90 per gallon. Considering the lower mpg, that translates to a 50% cost penalty for using E85.

My flex fuel vehicle doesn't have a huge dropoff when I use E85. I usually get 19; when I run E85 it's more like 17.

The biggest problem is finding a station that carries is. I know of 2 in my area so if I'm around there I usually make it a point to fill up with it.

I drive a CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicle for work and i believe the current rate for $2.15 per energy equivalent gallon of unleaded. It costs me about 25$ for a complete fill and i get a range of about 250 miles. So that is about $1/10 miles.
Compared to my personal car 55$ and i get a range of 400 miles. ~$1/7 miles.
