When I see the lowest price for a trip on a travel site (such as Travelocity), I go to the actual airline's site and get the trip for $10 (each way) less. From what I've seen, the travel sites just offer the fare from the airline then add their profit to it.

I always check United E-Fares:
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,1360,50065,00.html

(it only lists the flights Monday night thru Thursday)

Good for last minute weekend traveling.

I check kayak.com . It is a meta-search engine and it searches all of the airlines' websites plus orbitz, travelocity, etc..
