What's up with all the Chinatown Bus competition?

I used to go to NYC by train and Greyhound. I think it was $100 RT. That was about 10 years ago. Several years ago we had the start of the so called Chinatown buses. They charged about $40 RT. That competition has been fierce as a lot of competitors have merged in the last 3 to 5 years. Biggest complaint is safety and no toilet paper in the bathroom. I've ridden those Chinatown buses and it's way better then Greyhound in terms of comfort and price. I've recently learned that more non-chinese back companies are trying to get a cut on the action. Greyhound has their boltbus.com service which starts at $1 one way and progressively higher as the supply of seats dwindles. They also include bathrooms and free Wi-Fi starting end of March. Today I saw a new company called Megabus which is doing the same deal at $1 also.

So is there really that much demand on the east coast to justify this seemingly new business? The owners of the Chinese buses are tyrants and the drivers are not so friendly yet people take the abuse for $40 RT. I feel like the Chinatown bus wars are going to heat up as gas prices go up and people have more choices.

We have Megabus service between St. Louis and Chicago. I haven't personally used it but know a handful of people who have and they said you can't beat the price.

Man... I haven't ridden a commercial interstate bus since I was a kid (about 12 or 13).

22 hours on a bus from St. Louis back to Pensacola, FL.

Must be nice having WiFi and other entertainment on a bus nowadays.

that's interesting. wifi on bus seems like it'll be a biggger attraction, as a lot of the riders are actually college students treking home or friends in other cities (dc to boston is full of college hubs)

I've also heard of a jewish bus going now, but haven't heard anyone actually riding on it. I was joking that the jewish buses would go from suburb to suburb :-P

Last time I rode Greyhound was in '86. 72 hours from Ca. to La. Neither WiFi, TV, and meal service or anything else would be enough to get me on another.

What about a busload of strippers?

Would you "ride the bus" then?
