Smart car fails crash test!

i dont have a link yet should tomorrow.
just heard this on the news off the radio.
i guess the goverment was doing a side impact test on a smart car and when it bashed the passenger side of the car. the drivers side door thought open .if this is true it maybe the end of sales for this car in the states. i know from the size of this car i wouldn't own one. i cant see anyone walking away from a crash of anything over 5 mph bumper crash. that maybe the only way you walk out of this thing without ending up on a gurney.and more then likely with a sheet over your face. i will post a link to this story when i find it on the net.im sure it be on by tomorrow !

I should research before I comment, but isn't the company that manufactures these cars losing on everything they produce? I too wouldn't be caught dead in one of these.

Well, if the 35 MPG average fuel rating is to be met by 2020, this is what you will get. Something has to suffer!

I have seen 4 here on base - all different colors so they aren't the same one

But there is no way I would drive one here in Vegas! My insurance is high enough (doubled when we moved from CA).

Maybe in an impact between 2 Smart cars... you would actually survive.

Not enough mass or force to kill ya.

Smart Car versus any full size truck = EPIC FAIL

I'm really not surprised, as it would be very difficult for something as minuscule as the Smart Car to be rugged enough to survive some of these tests.

I had a Smart parked next to my F150 yesterday. It was...small. I mean really small. Like the length of my bed small. Guys, I don't want any of my loved ones driving something like this. Matter of fact - if you have State Farm, I don't want you driving one of these. And if you have State Farm, don't hit one either! YikeS!

IMHO, Smart Cars are for driving in busy cities - NYC, Chicago, etc. and should NOT be on the open roads, much less on freeways. They're just not safe.

I see a bunch of them around here and I seriously think you're safer on a motorcycle than in one of these little things out on the freeway.

Exactly. They actually don't get great gas mileage compared to some of the other offerings out there. They should be used for big city driving where space is a premium.

I agree with the target consumer being big city for space reasons, but the car holds up surprisingly well in crash vids. Ive thought about getting one, but mileage is higher on a number of other cars ie. a VW TDI Golf

you know, when geo metros from 15 years ago get better milage then these 'smart cars', I have to wonder what the point of the smart car actually is. The old subaru justys got better gas, we can build small cars that aren't so tiny you need a goat to tow them and get even better gas then the smart cars. These aren't 'green' cars, they are pet rocks.

Yeah, they were never really intended to be green or high mileage - heck, they're not even cheap. The only advantage they have is their tiny size. They're pretty popular in Paris where roads are narrow & parking is next to impossible to find - you can actually fit 2 Smart cars into a single 'normal' parking space. But outside of really large cities, a very small car doesn't have any advantage here in the States where the roads are wide & the parking plentiful.

Now if they got 70MGP or were electric, then maybe.
