Volvo Could Start Making Hybrid Garbage Trucks

It's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it. Making garbage trucks more sustainable became part of the agenda for Volvo when the company put 2 hybrid refuse trucks into regular daily operation in Sweden.

Hybrid drivertrains will not alleviate the smell of domestic trash, which is likely to accompany the trucks as they begin their trial with local collection firms Renova and Ragn-Sells. However, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will be reduced by 20 percent thanks to Volvo's diesel-electric system equipped with a Li-ion battery pack. In fact, one of the trucks will boast some plug-in functionality, powering its compactor with a grid-charged battery.

Green Car Congress says that both "Volvo FE hybrid refuse trucks combine a 7-liter (320 hp / 238 kW) diesel with a 120 kW motor," which alone can push the hefty vehicles to 12 mph. The diesel engines takes over at higher speeds. In addition, "when the truck stops, the diesel engine automatically switches off, avoiding unnecessary idling. The batteries are recharged via regenerative braking."

i think it makes sense, they're always doing stop and go driving ...

big deal. Let's see them pay homage to Back to the Future and make them run on garbage like the cars of the future are supposed to.

Garbage truck that runs on garbage? Naw, that would make too much sense.

Not a bad idea for vehicles which primarily travel many miles at low speeds and make frequent stops.

I wonder if an inner city bus has been retrofitted yet.

Our inner city buses run on low sulfer Bio Diesel currently... But I'd highly doubt that they would make the investment in converting them to hybrids.

Baltimore's city buses (not all) are hybrids. started seeing them a few years back. I'd be surprised if we were ahead of the curve on that.

DC has some hybrid buses too and so does Honolulu. I am glad to see hybrid garbage trucks are in production because I have been screaming for them since around 2001.

meh. they're WAY behind the curve. this is one area in which the US is ahead of european OEMS. right now, the best way to capture the energy lost in residential refuse service is through the use of a hydraulic launch assist system. it stores up energy in a hydraulic tank during breaking and releases it to launch the vehicle.

plug-in functionality right is a fairly absurd notion. the batteries are so, SOOOO expensive that having enough of them onboard to drive w/engine off capability makes an already tenuous HEV value story completely out of reach.

as i've mentioned before, i work for a company that leads the world in commercial hybrid power systems. there are certain vocations that hybrid power actually makes financial sense....certain P&D applications, utility vehicles, reefers, and a few others. but for the vast majority of people that want hybrid, unless you're getting tons of grant money, it's a break even proposition right now.

the vast majority of the system costs are being driven by the battery. it's obscenely expensive for us to buy, sell, and service. and we don't believe the battery company is getting rich either.

the only people really interested in plug-in commercial systems are...drumroll....the utility companies. they can obviously get electricity much cheaper and have an incentive to promote plug-in solutions.

one last thing....california just released a huge stimulus/tax incentive program for alternative vehicles. but it doesn't include diesel-powered options. this is absurd since the ONLY production-ready and widely available system capable of delivering real and easily obtained fuel and brake life savings, as well as delivering CO2 emission reductions is the hybrid diesel/electric setup.

/rant.

why not just make trash truck run on methane gas .the dump could just recycle it instead of just letting it release back into the air !
