Accident Insurance question
So I rented a Penske moving truck last week and while driving it I clipped the mirror of some other guys parked van. My truck was fine, but the other guy's mirror was broken. Fortunately I had signed up for insurance that would cover others' damage. I left a note with my number saying I'm sorry and that he should call me. Later he calls me up and starts whining that the repair cost is only $75 and that it's not worth it because if I fix that with my insurance it'll eventually raise his insurance costs much more. I'm assuming he wants a cash settlement so he doesn't have to deal with the insurance companies.
![]() Question: If the accident was 100% MY fault and MY insurance will completely cover the other guy's repair costs, will it still be considered an accident for him and thus affect his insurance rates in the long run?

He's fine. I've been in three accidents that were not my fault and my rates have never gone up.

He's trying to jack you for $75 cash. Let the damage insurer deal with it - just give them the guy's contact info and they'll take it from there. Then block the guy's phone calls...

Don't give him any dough! Let Penske's insurance people deal with it. |

![]() BTW.. if your insurance is handling things, then why would his insurance company even get involved? (since your comapany is going to repair him in full...) But honestly on a side note... for $75 worth of damage, I'd probably pay that out of pocket and get a signed agreement from him so that he wouldn't come back later lookin' for more money, especially if $75 is less than your deductible on your insurance. Chances are, it's one less strike against your insurance company for raising your rates due to you filing a claim against them.

yeah, there's no chance his insurance goes up. I've been involved in ~5 not-my-fault accidents in the past few years... my insurance never went up.
check your deductible though. if you had no deductible, then get penske insurance to do it. if you have a deductible, then just give him the 75 bucks, and be over. |

Ok here's another question:
How will going through the insurance company affect ME? I don't own a car and thus I don't have auto insurance. The insurance I had was a one-time insurance I bought as a part of renting the Penske truck. While my insurance will cover the accident, will it leave a blemish on my drivers licence record? If so, how could having that record affect me? I don't plan to own a car in the next 5 years (at least) but I occasionally rent a car. Is there any reason that it would be worth it for MY sake to just pay the guy off $75 in cash? p.s. there was no deductible, so if I went through the insurance company I wouldn't have to pay anything. |

If you didn't plan on USING the insurance then why did you pay extra to get it in the first place? I wouldn't think any black mark would exist on your record by actually using what you've already paid to have to fall back on in the event something exactly like this happened. ![]()

Because he doesn't have insurance of his own. If he accidentally hit a pedestrian then he would be up the creek w/o the insurance. My guess is he bought the insurance for the worst case scenario not for the $75 out of pocket expense. That being said, I would use the insurance. |

Precisely. It said it covered up to $100,000 of damages for the other person, which is a bit more than I have in my savings account. Bah, I'm not planning on owning a car anytime soon. I'm just gonna hand it over to the insurance company and call it a day. |

Ok.. since you paid for the PENSKE insurance, I'd let them handle it. That's what you paid them for (my bad, I thought you were using your own personal insurance company in my reply before.)
It will not affect his insurance and you won't be further out of pocket yourself. I dunno why the guy is gripin' about getting $75 directly... unless he planned to fix his vehicle himself and pocket the difference in the repair. ![]() |

The only way your driving record or potential future insurance rates will be affected is if a LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) cited you (gave you a ticket) or wrote a report as a result of the incident. If law enforcement was not involved you have nothing to worry about. Quote:
Hell, no! You paid for supplemental insurance to cover an event like this, so let the insurer deal with it. Last edited by mechmike0034 : 06-30-2009 at 04:37 PM. |

different but kind of the same type of person your dealing with. my daughter was driving down a main road yesterday. and this woman pulled out in front of her from a stores parking lot. my daughter called the cops and made a report at the time of the accident. she didn't file a insurance report.at 9:30 today she gets a call from her insurance company wanting to know why she didn't make one.turns out this girl who pulled out in front of my daughter was trying to scam the insurance company. my daughter has a $500 deductable and figured the damage was not as much or a little more then that. whe'll the insurance company called her back this afternoon and gave her great news there waving her deductable seeing they are finding the other drive as being 100% at fault and she was making such a seen they will go after her company for the deductable. happens every once in a while good thing go your way. also they are not going to raise her rates over this eather.
