car audio issue/question

Ok....so I've got a 1991 Olds 88. Don't laugh, it was given to me by my grandfather. Anyway, I'm going to replace the stereo, I'm going to upgrade it a little bit nothing special, just a lower end AIWA CD receiver. The problem is, that the on random occassions the front two speakers get very distorted, almost staticky, I'm not positive if their blown or not but they do work well sometimes. Anywho, I was hoping somebody might have an opinion if the speaker issue is caused by the crappy system and if replacing it might remedy the prob. I know this is random question, but I'd rather not cough up the $ for speakers as well if they're not necessary. Thanks

Do you know what size are the speakers, usually small drivers (especially factory speakers) cant reproduce certain frequencies, so they distort

if you can, check the wire connections to the back of the speakers and follow them to the head unit, looking for strips or loose connections. when you installed the deck, did you solder or crimp? you should go back and solder if you didn't already. if the speakers are blown they'll sound like crap all of the time, i'm thinking it's the wiring...or maybe your deck is too powerful for the old speakers and it's distorting...getting a set of cheapy speakers in this case would fix things

thanks for the input.....I have not replaced the receiver yet, so i would hope that it is not to powerful for the speakers. They are real small, they are 3.5 inches, and they're pretty crappy.

yeah the 3.5 in the GM really suck.
(I used to own a GM)
dont spend too much if you do replace them, cause they are still 3.5
u could try lowering the bass on the reciever and fade the sound alittle more to the back, to lower the distortion.

Thanks again for the input...I replaced the stereo with a decent JVC CD receiver and the speakers work fine and honestley sound 100% better, I guess when your expect the worst and get something halfway decent there's something to be said for that...$210 out of pocket total (Best Buy's alledged free installation)
