Now this is the MP3 unit I would want in my car

The PhatBox is installed in your car like a CD changer. Hook the PhatBox up to your existing head unit, which sees and treats the PhatBox as a CD changer.

that would be excellent. 20GB of space might not hold your 10,000 mp3s, but it would hold my collection and more

Wouldn't a 20gb momad jukebox do the same thing for half the price?

That being said... anyone got $795.25 I can borrow?

This is the one that I have.

I love it. Yeah, it's not what you are looking at, but it fits our needs.

20 gigs? Pfft, that wouldn't even hold half of my collection. . . but I'd say that is one bad@$$ set up to have.

Anyone here ever tried hooking up an old pentium system with say 100gb HD to a car? Then wire up one of those small LCD screen they put in cars to a vid card w/ tv out, buy a small touchpad, lengthen the cord, and you're set. Of course the wiring from the sound card to the car speakers would be a bit complicated but I'm sure it can be done. I've even seen programs for the TI-89 calculator that lets it act as a winamp controller...

Agreed. Someone posted this when it was still in mad-beta stage (yes, that's an industry term you need not concern yourself with...). Looks like they really did a decent job with 'er. Last I checked their site, they only had two compatible decks, but I assume they're far more accomdating.

I'm real interested. This would totally solve rigging up some stupid contraption that'd allow me to dock a laptop in my car! $800's a little on the steep side, tho...

LCD monitor - $150
Celeron system w/ tv out vid & sound card - $200
80gb HD- $130
ladybugs - free
touchpad - $50
wires, solder, and other hardware - $30 @ most

total $560

i bet this is also possible, use a normal 6cd changer and have it go in your Line In on your sound card so you can also play normal CD's...

am I the only one here with a creative mind??!! Say "yes, gee golly bobs sho.gun, you're hella smart.." It'd make my day...

yeah the phatbox is cool, i've been on their mailing list since they started development and was offered one from their test-trials but didn't have a kenwood unit that would work with it. It sounded like an awesome idea but i still think that shuffeling through thousands of files using my standard deck is a pain in the ass.

Hapoo, the LCD's that people put in vans cost around $100-150 and it comes with composite vid jacks so it's a very simple setup.

sorry, i forgot to mention. Instead of a touchpad i wanted a touchscreen display. hence the high cost.

one thing to keep in mind though... boot up time. Is there a way to make the comp boot straight into winamp, without loading explorer. Or maybe there are linux stuff that'll just boot straight into an mp3 player...

And how would one design the power supply to withstand shut down by cutting off the power. I wouldn't want to wait 10 seconds everytime i want to turn off my car to shut down my mp3 player...

is a car battery 12v DC or AC? if it's DC then it'l work perfectly.

save yourself the time, extra money, and thought (that's a valuable comodity around here) and just buy the Aiwa (or the Sony equivalent--right now with a $50 rebate at Good Guys) that chrissy posted and burn tons of MP3's on CDs. it's a lot easier and cheaper me thinks.

that one was pretty sweet. it might be fun to build it just so I can say that i did it! but I don't need 20GB of MP3's, Dave Matthews Band only has 10 CDs out...

what about using an iopener? hack it and add a HD, solder the audio out jacks and you got yourself a 20gig or whatever MP3 player with a built in 10in LCD screen
